Student innovators from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) showcased their artificial intelligenceโpowered solutions during the Agri, Aqua, and Livestock Products Exhibit held on January 28 at the University of Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center (USMARC) Lobby.
The exhibit was held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the University of Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research and Development Center (USMARDC) and the 40th anniversary of the Philippine Industrial Crops Research Institute (PICRI).
Participants were members of the Philippine Society of Information Technology Students (PSITS) from the BS Computer Science program, who presented innovative projects aimed at improving both agricultural and academic processes.
One of the featured projects, FarmGuide, was developed by Divine Angela Bacol, Zaldy Mar Ybaรฑez, Kian Chryslyr Cadungog, Glen Laurence Lagata, and John Albert Yabut.
The AI-powered agriculture hub offers expert-verified discussions, plant disease detection, and image-based crop diagnostics to support data-driven farming decisions.
During the demonstration, the team showed how farmers can scan images of diseased plants to receive suggested diagnoses, treatment options, and access to localized farming tips and community discussions.
Another project, Plant-O-Matic, was created by Keandra Nathalie Acosta, Angelou Eramis, Dennis Louis Saljay, Jessa Mae Angoy, and Rey Intes; a digital farming assistant features planting calculators, land-shape and garden planners, and an AI-powered AgriChat assistant designed to maximize land use and reduce agricultural waste.
The team demonstrated how farmers can input lot dimensions, visualize land layouts, and automatically compute plant spacing and crop arrangements, helping save time and improve farm planning efficiency.
Meanwhile, Attendify, presented by Joshua Dave Cantorna, EJ Faye Dulay, Edgardo Gabriel Paclibar, Hasmin Idsla, and Cloyd Villanueva, introduced a smart attendance system that replaces manual roll calls with QR-based self check-in, multi-method tracking, automated validation, excuse workflows, and exportable reports.
Through FarmGuide, Plant-O-Matic, and Attendify, CEIT PSITS students demonstrated that their projects go beyond classroom requirementsโoffering real-world AI solutions that aim to transform Mindanaoโs farms and classrooms into smarter, more connected spaces for the future.

Richard A. Camato made his mark in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Licensure Examination (ABELE) after earning an 87.56% rating and placing Rank 10 among the top examinees nationwide. For him, the result was more than just a number. It was proof that years of effort, patience, and belief paid off.
Behind this achievement is a young man from Lampagang, Tulunan, North Cotabato. Richard grew up in a simple family. His parents, who are farmers, worked the land to support their four children. Life was not easy, as he said, especially when three of them were studying in college at the same time. Richard shared that here were moments when his siblings felt like giving up, but their parents kept pushing forward, doing everything they could to help their children finish school.
When preparing for the licensure exam, Richard did not rely on shortcuts. As early as his third year in college, he began organizing his lessons in his mind. From first year up to his fifth year in college, he slowly built his understanding of the subjects.
Interestingly, Richard did not use online notes or printed reviewers, as he shared. He focused on remembering concepts so that during review time, he only needed to recall them, not read everything again. He mentioned during the interview that he had no secret at allโonly steady learning.
