When a parent passes away, the sons and daughters left behind begin a new phase of birr (dutifulness) to that parent.

It is the Birr after death that is the truest and most sincere form, only Allah hears and sees us.

A deceased parent is in greater need of his children – even more than when the parent was alive.

Through the child’s Du’a, Allah – with His grace and mercy – enlightens the grave removing the darkness and expands it and remove the suffering. And Allah makes the grave a garden from the gardens of Paradise for the deceased.

“A man’s status will be raised in Paradise and he will ask, ‘How did I get here?’ He will be told, ‘By your son’s du’aa’s (prayers) for forgiveness for you.” Ibn Majah, 3660 & Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1617:

Therefore, let us always remember our deceased parent/s, and always ask Allah to shower them with His mercy, enlighten their grave and expand it.

Let us always remember our parents in our Du’a during sujood between the adhaan and the iqamah, as we fast, in every act of worship, and at all times.

“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment….” (Surah al-Isra’, 17: 23)

“… and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.” (Surah al-Isra’, 17: 23-24)

"And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” (Surah al-Ahqaf, 46:15).

With this, it is very much important that our children need to remain on the right path. If they lead their lives on the wrong path and involve themselves in wrongdoings and sinful acts, their du’a and other activities will not be beneficial for their deceased parents. The parents themselves will be in questionable situation for their children’s activities in this world.
