The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics Department of Basilan State College proudly held its 4th White Coat Ceremony on October 17, 2025, at the BaSC Amphitheater. The momentous event served as a symbolic rite of passage for the Nutrition and Dietetics students as they officially donned their white coats—an emblem of their dedication, integrity, and commitment to the values and responsibilities of their chosen profession.

The ceremony highlighted the students’ transition from classroom learning to professional practice, reinforcing their pledge to uphold the principles of ethical service and compassionate care in promoting health and nutrition. Faculty members, parents, and guests graced the occasion, witnessing this significant milestone that marks the beginning of the students’ professional journey.

The department extends its heartfelt gratitude to the college administration, faculty, and partners for their unwavering support and guidance in shaping future Nutritionist-Dietitians. In pursuit of academic excellence and the continuous professional development of educators, the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (BSND) Department of Basilan State College actively participated in the training program titled “Enhancing Faculty in Conducting and Teaching Research, Part I: Research Proposal Development.”

This two-day face-to-face session was organized by the Nutritionist-Dietitians Association of the Philippines Foundation (NDAPF) and held at the Old Conference Room of Basilan State College. It aimed to strengthen the faculty’s capability to design, develop, and present relevant research proposals aligned with current issues and innovations in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

The faculty members of the BSND Department took this opportunity to present their individual research proposal, which were then subjected to expert critique and guidance. The panelists who graciously shared their time and expertise were Ms. Consuelo L. Orense, RND, a former Supervising Science Research Specialist and a respected member of the NDAPF, and Ms. Czarina Teresita S. Martinez, RND, Member, Board of Trustees of NDAPF. Their constructive feedback and professional insights helped enhance the quality, relevance, and academic rigor of the presented research concepts.

This first installment of the research capacity-building initiative marks a vital step in preparing the faculty not only to engage in scholarly work but also to guide and mentor students in conducting ethical, evidence-based research. It reflects the department's strong commitment to fostering a research culture within Basilan State College and contributing meaningfully to the advancement of nutrition and public health knowledge.

July 16, 2025 | Nutrition Month Seminar

In observance of the 51st Nutrition Month, the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics Department of Basilan State College successfully conducted a seminar on July 16, 2025, held at the Basilan State College Amphitheater, with the theme: “Food at Nutrition Security Maging Priority! Sapat na Pagkain Karapatan Natin!”

The said activity was attended by BSND students from Levels I to III, and was organized with the objective of strengthening their knowledge and awareness on the multifaceted approaches to achieving food and nutrition security in the country.

The department was privileged to welcome two esteemed resource speakers whose expertise greatly enriched the discussions:

Dr. Manuel D. Gacutan, Jr., Head of the Animal Science Department, College of Agriculture and Food Science, Visayas State University, presented the topic, “Animal-Derived Foods: Their Sources and Benefits in Human Nutrition.” His lecture emphasized the nutritional contributions of animal-derived foods and their vital role in supporting human health and development.

Mr. Oscar S. Francisco, Jr., Dean of the College of Agriculture, Basilan State College, shared his insights on “Growing Nutrition: The Role of Crops and Sustainable Agriculture in Achieving Food and Nutrition Security.” He highlighted the critical need for sustainable agricultural practices to ensure continuous access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food.

A key takeaway from the seminar was the emphasized importance of interdisciplinary collaboration—particularly between agriculturists and nutritionist-dietitians—in combating malnutrition and ensuring the safety and adequacy of food in all communities.

The activity aligns with the department’s continuing commitment to fostering holistic education, promoting community awareness, and preparing future nutrition professionals to become effective agents of change in the field of nutrition and public health.

The department extend its sincere gratitude to the resource speakers and students for their active participation and support in making this seminar a success.
