From struggling to read and spell CVC words during her first assessment, our dear Pia Aimee, an incoming Kindergarten learner, has shown amazing progress through hard work and dedication. β¨
Now, she can already read CVC words, phrases, simple sentences, long words, and even short stories with comprehension. She can also spell CVC words and words with consonant blends confidently. ππ

Hard Truths About Teaching Reading
(That Many People Avoid Talking About)
πTeaching children to read is one of the most important responsibilities of teachers and parents.
But here are some uncomfortable truths that research and real classroom experience continue to show:
1. Hard Work Alone Is NOT Enough
A child can spend hours practicing readingβ¦
But if the instruction is unclear or ineffective, progress may still be slow.
πResearch shows that HOW children are taught matters greatly.
Effective reading instruction must be:
β explicit
β systematic
β step-by-step
2. Memorization Is Not Real Reading
Some children can memorize stories or familiar wordsβ¦
But struggle when faced with new words.
π Why?
Because real reading requires decoding skillsβnot just memory.
Strong readers can apply letter-sound knowledge to unfamiliar words.
3. Not All Children Learn the Same Way or at the Same Speed
Some children learn quickly.
Others need more repetition, practice, and support.
This does NOT mean one child is smarter than another.
πResearch consistently shows that children develop reading skills at different rates.
4. Guessing Is NOT Reading
Teaching children to rely mainly on:
β pictures
β context clues
β memorization
can create weak reading habits.
Skilled readers decode words accurately using phonics knowledge.
5. Weak Foundations Lead to Bigger Problems Later
When children do not master:
β phonemic awareness
β phonics
β blending
π reading difficulties often become more serious in higher grades.
Early intervention matters.
6. Reading Difficulties Can Affect Confidence and Behavior
Some struggling readers may:
π avoid reading
π become frustrated
π lose confidence
π act uninterested in class
Sometimes behavior problems are actually signs of academic struggle.
What Research-Based Teaching Suggests:
β Teach skills systematically
β Build mastery step-by-step
β Give guided practice and repetition
β Correct errors early
β Encourage children consistently
π₯For Teachers and Parents:
Children do not become strong readers through pressure or shame.
π They become strong readers through effective instruction, patience, and support.
π Final Thought:
The goal is not simply to make children read words.
The goal is to help them become confident, independent, and lifelong readers.
And that starts with teaching reading the RIGHT way.
