Trees help to clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and support more than 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. Carbon dioxide (CO2), a primary greenhouse gas in the environment, is absorbed by trees as they develop. According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the roots of trees retain the soil in place while fighting erosion, which produces landslides. It also collects and stores rainwater, which helps to prevent runoff and sediment deposits following storms. It also helps recharge groundwater supplies, inhibits chemical transmission into streams, and prevents flooding. Communities that plant trees can assist in mitigating the effects of climate change both locally and globally.
