The College of Arts and Sciences joins the university in observing the 2025 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW)—a call to action that reminds us that change begins with every voice raised, every choice made, and every stand taken.

We invite the entire CAS community to come together as we champion this year’s subtheme: “𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗩𝗔𝗪: 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.”

𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀

The Department of Biological Sciences proudly shares a new research publication authored by Mr. Dan Patrick D. Acebo, BS Biology program alumnus and faculty member of the department, and Asst. Prof. Angelbert D. Cortes, also a faculty member of the department, together with BS Biology program graduates Ms. Eunice May E. Martos and Mr. Jan Carl R. Pedroso. Asst. Prof. Cortes served as their thesis adviser, while Ms. Jonah Micah A. Lagua-Remolona served as the technical critic for this study.

Their research article, titled “Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using 𝘒𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦 (𝘎𝘭𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘶𝘮 (Jacq.) Kunth ex Walt) leaf extract and its antimicrobial property against human pathogens,” has been published in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘦, a Scopus-indexed scientific journal.

Their study explored the use of 𝘒𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦 leaf extract in synthesizing silver nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity. By combining traditional folk medicine and nanotechnology, this research highlights the potential of locally available plant materials for an economical and sustainable synthesis of nanomaterials that may help address antimicrobial resistance—a growing global health concern.

Congratulations to our very own 𝗗𝗿. 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝘆𝗰𝗲 𝗣. 𝗜𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻 and her esteemed co-authors, on the successful publication of their research in the prestigious 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮! 👏🏻

This work is featured in an internationally peer-reviewed journal, which is indexed in major global databases like PubMed Central, Scopus, and the WHO WPRIM.
