The Department of Biological Sciences warmly congratulates our faculty member, Ms. Andrea Roselle L. Catabona, MSc, for earning her master’s degree!

Ms. Catabona successfully completed her Master of Science in Biology at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Manila. Her graduation ceremony was celebrated today at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

The proposed program will offer two specialization tracks:
- Academic Track
- Research Track

We respectfully invite biology professionals, educators, researchers, industry practitioners, alumni, and prospective graduate students to participate in this survey. The results will be used to determine the level of interest, potential demand, preferred learning arrangements, and academic and industry needs for the proposed doctoral program.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀

Dr. Lloyd O. Balinado presented during Session 3: Policy, Education, and Planning at the National Summit on Botanic Gardens and Arboreta sponsored by DENR-ERDB, held on May 27, 2026 at Acacia Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

He presented “USBONG: A University-based Native Tree Conservation and Monitoring Project,” highlighting initiatives on native tree conservation and monitoring within CvSU.

The summit served as a venue for sharing experiences, challenges, and insights related to the establishment, management, research, and governance of botanic gardens and arboreta. It also emphasized their significance in biodiversity conservation, environmental education, ecotourism, and sustainable development.

𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

The Department of Biological Sciences proudly shares the remarkable achievement of our faculty members who swept the top three spots for Best Extension Projects in the recently held 2026 CvSU Extension Conference which took place last May 20, 2026 at the CvSU International Convention Center.

The winning projects are:

𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙀𝙭𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩:
Strengthening Agro-Urban Communities Through Opportunities in Beekeeping (SACTOBee) led by Dr. Dickson N. Dimero.

2𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚:
BIOCAMP (Bioresearch Initiative for Outreach and Collaborative Academic Mentorship Program) led by Dr. Lloyd O. Balinado.

3𝙧𝙙 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚:
S&T Community-Based Farm (STBF) on Harnessing the Synergy of Vegetable Production and Stingless Beekeeping (VegeBee) headed by Assoc. Prof. Michele T. Bono.

In the ongoing projects category, our faculty continued to shine:

Dr. Dickson N. Dimero won 3rd Place Best Extension Coordinator and was named 𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 (𝙎𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 3).

Dr. Lloyd O. Balinado also bagged the 𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 (𝙎𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 2) award.

Anchored on the theme “ASCEND with Integrity: Ethics as the Foundation of Extension Excellence,” the conference was part of the university's Futures Thinking Week celebration, gathering extensionists from across the entire university system.

These achievements reflect the department’s excellence in extension work and showcase our commitment to uplifting communities. After all, science should not be confined within the four corners of the university, but extended to the people. In DBS, we believe in the power of science as a catalyst for meaningful social change.

We are proud to share a recent publication titled “𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢 (L.) Burm.f. Enhances Caudal Fin Regeneration in Zebrafish (𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰)” by Ms. Millennie Jeilissa M. Nieva, Ms. Jasmine P. Mendoza, and Ms. Charci Zui S. Flormata (BS Biology graduates) together with DBS faculty members, Dr. Lloyd O. Balinado, Assoc. Prof. Ma. Veronica P. Peñaflorida, and Ms. Arvie Grace B. Masibag.

Published in The Palawan Scientist and indexed in Scopus, this study highlights the regenerative potential of 𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢 using the zebrafish model, adding valuable insights to the field of biological and regenerative research.
