IN PHOTOS: OP Schools In-Service Training for Teachers 2026, held on May 21, 2026, at the Mother Rosario Hall of Holy Rosary Academy β Molo, Inc., bringing together teachers and staff from eleven Dominican schools for a meaningful and timely discussion on legal matters concerning teachers, students, parents, school administrators, educational institutions, and the wider community.
The training formally commenced with a solemn prayer led by Sr. Ma. Ana Rose M. Tababa, OP, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. An opening message was delivered by Sr. Ma. Lucila A. Narra, OP, Dominican Schools Superintendent, who warmly welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of legal awareness and professional responsibility in the educational setting.
To foster camaraderie and energize the participants before the formal session, a community dance was conducted. This was followed by the introduction of the guest speaker, Attorney Joseph Noel M. Estrada, who was formally presented by Ms. Analie A. Talaron, faculty member of Holy Rosary Academy β Molo.
During the discussion proper, Atty. Estrada provided an in-depth discussion on Child Protection and the Rights of Schools to Enforce Student Discipline. He discussed essential topics including student discipline, positive and violent discipline, corporal punishment, and child abuse. To provide legal context and practical understanding, he presented various school-related cases involving allegations of child abuse that were later recognized as lawful disciplinary measures rather than abuse, as supported by Republic Act No. 7610 and relevant jurisprudence. He emphasized that βwhat is not prohibited is allowed,β while firmly reminding participants that βthe best interest of the child is never an excuse for cruelty.β
Further discussions explored child discipline and child-rearing practices, school rules concerning student discipline, the principle of in loco parentis, the duties of parents in the education of their children, and the principles governing school discipline, including its extent and limitations. Atty. Estrada also highlighted education as a contractual relationship and discussed teachersβ protection from liabilities concerning the safety of students under their care, with emphasis on due diligence, contributory negligence, and proximate cause.
Following the lecture, participants were given the opportunity to raise questions and share experiences and concerns encountered within their respective schools, resulting in a meaningful exchange of ideas and practical insights relevant to the realities of school administration and student discipline.
The training concluded with a message of gratitude delivered by Sr. Ma. Rodna Y. Bardenas, OP, Principal of East Negros Academy, Inc. In recognition of his valuable contribution and expertise, Atty. Estrada was awarded a plaque of appreciation and a token as a distinguished guest of the training.
The training served as a meaningful avenue for educators to deepen their understanding of legal responsibilities and ethical practices within the school environment. Through informed discussions and shared experiences, the training reinforced the commitment of Dominican schools to uphold child protection, responsible discipline, and a safe, compassionate, and legally grounded educational community.
