The Department of Biology warmly invites all parents and guardians to the Biology General Assembly for the First Semester of Academic Year 2026–2027.

This gathering aims to strengthen the partnership between the University and our families through discussions on academic policies, program updates, laboratory and practicum requirements, departmental activities, and other important matters that support the academic success and holistic development of our BS Biology students.

The study was recently published in the International Journal of Aquatic Biology (IJAB). The research examined antibiotic resistance among dominant bacterial isolates obtained from cultured whiteleg shrimp in Iloilo, Philippines. By integrating phenotypic susceptibility testing and molecular detection of resistance genes, the study provides valuable insights into the complexity of antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture and emphasizes the importance of strengthened surveillance and responsible antibiotic management.

Conducted as an undergraduate thesis under the guidance of 𝙈𝙧. 𝙅𝙤𝙨𝙬𝙖 𝙂. 𝘽𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙙 as adviser and 𝙈𝙖’𝙖𝙢 𝙀𝙙𝙙𝙖 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖 𝙔𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙤 as co-adviser. This highlights how locally available agricultural materials can contribute to sustainable agriculture, microbial research, and the productive management of agricultural waste.

The Department of Biology proudly congratulates two of our faculty members on reaching significant milestones in their academic journeys.

𝙈𝙖'𝙖𝙢 𝙄𝙫𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙚 𝙋𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡 𝘼. 𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙤 earned her Master of Science in Biology degree from the University of the Philippines Visayas on July 10, 2026.

We also congratulate 𝙈𝙖'𝙖𝙢 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙉𝙞𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙎. The Department of Biology is proud to be part of Project IPaTubig, a University-wide initiative that reflects the true spirit of service-learning and community engagement.

Through this meaningful project, BS Biology students are brought beyond the four walls of the classroom—applying scientific knowledge, skills, and values to help create practical solutions that better serve our local communities.

More than learning concepts, our students are given the opportunity to transform what they learn into actions that promote access to safe and sustainable water systems, community empowerment, and lasting social impact.

Together, we continue to uphold the Augustinian mission of forming learners who do not only excel academically, but also serve with purpose, compassion, and commitment.

On June 10, 2026, the Department conducted a benchmarking activity with the 𝘿𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝘽𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨, 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙤 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮–𝙄𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙣 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 (𝙈𝙎𝙐-𝙄𝙄𝙏). On the same day, the team also visited 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙤 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮–𝙉𝙖𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙣. The benchmarking activity continued the following day at 𝘾𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙤 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 - 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘽𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨, particularly its Microbiology Program.

The discussions centered on key areas essential to 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 observed in the respective institutions.

These engagements reflect the Department’s dedication to fostering a culture of quality, collaboration, and excellence in biology education.
