𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗷𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗹𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗼 will hold its 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 상반기 수료식) on 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟯𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 (𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆) at the 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺, 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺, West Visayas State University.

This semester, KSI Iloilo proudly celebrates 126 student completers from different levels ranging from Beginner to Advanced Korean language classes. The program will feature the recognition of completers, awarding of outstanding students, and special presentations in celebration of another successful semester of learning Korean language and culture.

𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆, KSI Iloilo will also conduct the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗞𝗦𝗜 𝗜𝗹𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗼 𝗞𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 일로일로 세종학당 말하기 대회), where successful applicants will showcase their Korean speaking skills, confidence, and creativity.

Last year, KSI Iloilo proudly secured a place among the Top 10 Finalists in the Global King Sejong Korean Speaking Contest, reflecting the dedication and excellence of our students on the international stage. Through this year’s competition, we continue to encourage our learners to grow, challenge themselves, and confidently share their voices in Korean. 🗣️

The exam period officially began on 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟵for the first part, and continues from 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟭𝟴 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟯 for the remaining examinations. This is the final stretch—where effort meets opportunity, and preparation turns into achievement.

Today, we honor Sejong the Great, one of Korea’s most respected kings and the creator of 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙪𝙡 (한글), the Korean alphabet. 🇰🇷✨

📌 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚:
Starting in 2025, South Korea officially designated May 15, the birthday of King Sejong, as a national commemorative day. This formal recognition highlights his enduring legacy in creating 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙪𝙡 and his contributions to education, literacy, and Korean cultural identity.

King Sejong created Hangeul in 1443 to make reading and writing accessible to ordinary people. Before this, only the elite could easily learn Chinese characters used in writing. His vision was simple yet revolutionary: that everyone should have the ability to learn and communicate.

Because of his remarkable contributions to education, science, and culture, King Sejong continues to be remembered as a symbol of wisdom, compassion, and progress in Korean history.

At KSI Iloilo, we celebrate not only his legacy but also the power of language in connecting people and cultures across borders. 💙

The expression became widely known through the famous Korean Parents’ Day song 〈어머님 은혜〉, a song that honors the lifelong dedication and unconditional love of parents. 🇰🇷🎶

In Korea, this phrase is often shared during 어버이날 (Parents’ Day) as a heartfelt message of thanks and respect for parents.

Did you know that every May 8, South Korea celebrates Parents’ Day (어버이날-eobeoinal)—a special occasion dedicated to honoring the love, sacrifices, and guidance of parents and elders? 🇰🇷

𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙖:
In South Korea, the month of May is often called “𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵”(가정의 달) because several family-centered celebrations are observed throughout the month, including Children’s Day (May 5), Parents’ Day (May 8 ), and Teachers’ Day (May 15). It is a season dedicated to expressing love, gratitude, and appreciation for the people who shape our lives.

Although Parents’ Day is widely celebrated across the country, it is not considered a public holiday, which means schools, offices, and businesses continue their regular operations. Still, families make time to express their gratitude through heartfelt letters, quality time, practical gifts, and the giving of red carnations—the traditional symbol of love and appreciation for parents. ❤️

This meaningful celebration reminds us of the importance of family bonds and expressing gratitude not only through words, but through everyday actions.

While today is often filled with gifts, outings, and theme parks, it also serves as a meaningful reminder to respect children as independent thinkers and future leaders.

𝗔 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:
Did you know that before the 1920s, there wasn’t even a formal word for “children” in Korean? Activist 𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙅𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙜-𝙝𝙬𝙖𝙣 coined the term Eorini (어린이) to replace expressions that treated children as subordinates. His vision was to promote dignity and respect for children—leading to the first Children’s Day celebration in 1923.

𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀:
From simple picnics in the past, Children’s Day has grown into one of the most celebrated holidays in South Korea. If May 5 falls on a weekend, an alternative holiday is observed so families can still spend quality time together. Today, even adults join the fun through “Kidult” (Kid + Adult) culture—embracing childhood joys through toys, collectibles, and shared experiences. 🧸

As a proud alumnus of the Korea–Philippines Next Generation Koreanists Exchanges, Collaborations & Trainings (KONECT) program, our Manager, 𝗠𝘀. 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝘇𝘇𝗮 𝗦. 𝗖𝗮ñ𝗲𝘁𝗲 shared a special research presentation during the colloquium—highlighting comparative perspectives on language, landscape, and historical consciousness in Iloilo City and Seoul. This contribution reflects the continued impact of KONECT in fostering emerging scholars in Korean Studies and cross-cultural research.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the UP Korea Research Center and the Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages (BAFL) Program for organizing this enriching colloquium, bringing together students, alumni, and researchers in meaningful academic exchange.

Engaging with BAFL students and fellow scholars, the KSI Iloilo team was honored to take part in conversations that deepen our understanding of language as a bridge between cultures and histories.
