From conquering the vast oceans for 40 years to shaping young mariners in the classroom, Capt. Joel Pe, a proud Upsilonian, continues to live a life of discipline, perseverance, and service.
Now at 63, Brod Joel has shifted his sails from sea voyages to teaching maritime students at the University of Antique under the BSMT program. His journey proves that true leadership and brotherhood extend beyond the waters—guiding and inspiring the next generation.

A sailor cannot control the wind, but can adjust the sails to use its power to reach a destination.

For Capt. Joel Pe, the sea was not just a career—it was his life for 40 years. Since 1983, he has navigated the vast oceans with discipline and perseverance. Now at 63 years old, he finds himself on a different voyage—this time teaching aspiring marine students at the University of Antique (UA), where he has been instructing maritime students since 2020 under the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) program.

From commanding discipline aboard ships to nurturing young minds, Capt. Pe’s journey proves that the lessons of the sea extend far beyond the waters.

The transition to teaching came during the pandemic, when a colleague encouraged him to apply at UA. Coming from a family of educators—his mother, wife, and even child—he was inspired to try the profession, as well.

“Impart ko lang sa students ang na-experience ko sa barko,” he said in an interview.

Life at sea taught Capt. Pe the value of strict discipline, but he understands that the same level cannot be directly applied in academics. Instead, he balances discipline with patience, recognizing that his students are still preparing for the challenges of life onboard.

“Gina encourage ko sanda nga amo ja ang BSMT kun gusto ninyo, go kamo. Basta akon mahambal, tam-an ka lisod, tiyaga lang gid kag determination niyo, " he added.

With his extensive experience in maritime training centers in Manila, Capt. Pe continues to enrich his teaching with practical knowledge of what he gained there.

“Ten years from now, may makita ako kag nami ang rugya sa aton. Nami may mga potential sanda…Gina encourage ko lang man e nga tiyaga lang gid kag magbuol gid kang exam,” Capt. Pe finished.

For Capt. Joel Pe, teaching is not just a second career—it is a continuation of his lifelong mission to guide others through uncharted waters. From sea voyages to classroom lectures, his life remains a compass for students who dream of setting sail toward their own destinies.
