Did you know - that one of the few people on Earth with an asteroid named in their honor is an Ilongga from Janiuay, Iloilo? 𝗬𝗲𝘀 — 𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗝𝘂𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝟭𝟯𝟮𝟰𝟭 𝗕𝗜𝗬𝗢 / Planet BIYO , silently carrying the name of 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗧. 𝗕𝗶𝘆𝗼, one of the Philippines’ most influential science educators.

Dr. Biyo taught at 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 – 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 (𝗣𝗦𝗛𝗦-𝗪𝗩), where she developed her iconic “𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲”, pushing students to research, explore, experiment, and think beyond classroom walls. 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗹𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗼, conducting field studies, health outreach, and empowering young scholars long before STEM education became a national priority.

Today, she continues her mission of uplifting Philippine science as a 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗪𝗩𝗦𝗨), shaping future educators and scientists through graduate-level teaching and mentorship. Her journey comes full circle, from Iloilo, back to Iloilo, yet now with global and cosmic impact.

Her dedication led her to win the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟮, making her 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Because of her extraordinary influence, scientists from 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 (𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗔𝗥) program honored her by naming a newly discovered asteroid after her “𝟭𝟯𝟮𝟰𝟭 𝗕𝗶𝘆𝗼”

𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝟭𝟯𝟮𝟰𝟭 𝗕𝗜𝗬𝗢
📌 It is part of the main asteroid belt, the massive region between Mars and Jupiter filled with millions of rocky bodies.
📌 It was discovered on May 22, 1998 in New Mexico, USA.
📌 Asteroid 13241 Biyo follows a stable orbit around the Sun and will exist for millions, even billions of years, meaning her name is essentially etched into the universe forever.
📌 Asteroids like Biyo help scientists study the early formation of our solar system, since these bodies are remnants from 4.5 billion years ago.
📌 Only a very select group of humans ever receive the honor of having a celestial object named after them, and Dr. Biyo remains the only Filipino with this distinction.
