About the Speaker:
Prof. Dr. Noam Avram Chomsky is a prominent American linguist, philosopher, social critic, and political activist. Considered the founder of modern linguistics, Chomsky is one of the most cited scholars in modern history. Among his groundbreaking books are “Syntactic Structures," “Language and Mind,” “Aspects of the Theory of Syntax,” and “The Minimalist Program,” each of which has made distinct contributions to the development of the field. He has received numerous awards, including the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences, the Helmholtz Medal and the Ben Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science. Chomsky introduced the Chomsky hierarchy, generative grammar, and the concept of a universal grammar, which underlies all human speech and is based in the innate structure of the mind/brain. Chomsky has not only transformed the field of linguistics, his work has influenced fields such as cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, computer science, mathematics, childhood education, and anthropology. Through his contributions to linguistics and related fields, incuding cognitive psychology and the philosophies of mind and language, Chomsky helped to initiate and sustain what came to be known as the “cognitive revolution.” In addition to his contributions to linguistics, Chomsky has been a prominent and outspoken political activist for many decades. He is known for his critique of U.S. foreign policy and imperialism, his opposition to neoliberalism and capitalism, and his support for social justice movements. Chomsky has written over 100 books and has been a prolific public speaker, delivering lectures and participating in debates and discussions around the world. He joined the University of Arizona in fall 2017, coming from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked since 1955 as professor of linguistics, then professor of linguistics, emeritus.
