The professional learning session featured focused presentations from the school's Master Teachers. Ma'am Nemia L. Alerta discussed the integration of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) into classroom assessments, emphasizing cognitive rigor, critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and the development of PISA-like assessment items that encourage learners to apply knowledge in authentic and real-life contexts rather than relying solely on memorization. She underscored the importance of designing assessment tasks that cultivate problem-solving, interpretation, evaluation, and evidence-based reasoning consistent with the goals of the revised K to 12 curriculum.
Meanwhile, Sir Leopoldo P. Quiñon Jr. presented the Social Content Guidelines in assessment construction. He reminded the team to ensure that all assessment materials uphold fairness, inclusivity, gender sensitivity, cultural responsiveness, and respect for diversity while avoiding stereotypes, bias, discriminatory language, and inappropriate content. He emphasized that assessment should not only measure learning competencies but also reflect ethical, socially responsible, and learner-centered educational practices.
Sir Rene B. Cordon facilitated the discussion on the standards and technical guidelines in test construction, revisiting the essential principles of developing high-quality assessment tools. His presentation highlighted competency alignment, appropriate table of specifications, balanced cognitive levels, clarity of test directions, quality item construction, objectivity, validity, reliability, and adherence to the provisions of DepEd Order No. 015, s. 2026 and the Curriculum Implementation Division (CID) Quality Assurance Tool. He emphasized that every assessment should faithfully measure the intended learning competencies while maintaining technical accuracy and fairness.
Throughout the meeting, participants reaffirmed that assessment must always follow the curriculum—not the other way around. The collaborative discussions reinforced the importance of developing teacher-made, competency-based, curriculum-aligned assessments that accurately reflect the lessons delivered in the classroom and provide meaningful evidence of learners' achievement.
In his message, Dr. Marlo C. Quidato emphasized that quality assurance is a shared professional responsibility that requires continuous collaboration, technical expertise, and commitment from every teacher. He encouraged the team to maintain the highest standards in assessment development, ensuring that every classroom assessment contributes to improved instruction and meaningful learner outcomes.
Through initiatives such as this, Janiuay National Comprehensive High School continues to strengthen its culture of instructional excellence, collaborative leadership, and evidence-based educational practice. By investing in continuous professional learning and rigorous quality assurance, the school remains committed to delivering assessments that are valid, reliable, curriculum-driven, and responsive to the diverse learning needs of every JNCHS learner.
