In celebration of National Womenโs Month, we feature Frances Canitan, a Lacsonian alumna whose journey reflects the quiet strength, discipline, and dedication that Filipina women bring into service oriented professions.
Frances chose JBLFMU-Molo because of its strong reputation as a leading maritime institution. The universityโs training programs, facilities, and industry connections made it an ideal place to begin her journey toward a maritime related career. Through the Basic Seafarers Catering Management program at the Tech Voc Center, she gained the knowledge and hands on training needed for service work in hospitality and maritime environments.
Life at the university required discipline and commitment. The training environment prepared students to develop teamwork, responsibility, and readiness for real world situations. Frances recalls several experiences that shaped her growth. Maritime drills and training activities strengthened her sense of discipline and cooperation. School events brought together students from different programs and built camaraderie across departments. One memorable experience was participating in an eco tourism activity in Guimaras, where teamwork and shared responsibilities created lasting memories with her classmates.
One Lacsonian value that continues to guide her career is professionalism. During her time in the university, she learned the importance of discipline, respect, and responsibility in every task. These lessons became important when she entered the hospitality industry.
Starting her career was not without challenges. Adjusting to the fast paced environment of hotel service and meeting high expectations from guests required patience and confidence. At times, the pressure of learning new tasks while delivering excellent service felt overwhelming. The discipline and professionalism she developed as a student helped her stay focused and adapt to the demands of her role.
Her efforts and dedication did not go unnoticed. During her time at the university, she was recognized for community service and received a Leadership Service Award for her contributions and participation in volunteer programs. These recognitions reflect her commitment to service and teamwork.
Frances believes that her training at John B. Lacson helped prepare her for real life challenges by strengthening her problem solving skills, communication, and teamwork. These qualities continue to guide her as she handles daily responsibilities in the hospitality field.
She also recognizes that industries today are evolving alongside technology. Digital tools, data driven systems, and technical skills are becoming increasingly important in many workplaces. Students preparing for the future must remain adaptable, develop new competencies, and stay open to learning as industries change.
One piece of advice from her mentors remains close to her heart. Practice discipline and professionalism in everything you do. A strong attitude and work ethic will always shape a personโs success.
Her message to Lacsonian students is to make the most of their time in school. Build knowledge, strengthen discipline, and hold on to the values that will guide their professional journey.
Through dedication, service, and the courage to continue learning, Frances Canitan reflects the spirit of a Lacsonian woman who contributes quietly yet meaningfully in her field. Like the Babaylans who once guided their communities with care and wisdom, she carries forward that same spirit of guidance through service, helping create workplaces grounded in respect, responsibility, and shared progress.
