𝗗𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗥𝗗𝗖

Five Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholars and BS Applied Mathematics students successfully presented the highlights of their DOST Practical Training Program (PTP) experience during a presentation held on July 21, 2026, at the University Research and Development Center (URDC) Office.

The participating scholars - 𝙆𝙞𝙧𝙩 𝘼𝙣𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙞 𝙃. 𝘼𝙢𝙖𝙧, 𝙈𝙖. 𝙆𝙖𝙧𝙮𝙡𝙚 𝙂. 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙗𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙣, 𝙍𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙚 𝘿𝙬𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝘿. 𝙅𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙞, 𝙋𝙖𝙪𝙡 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙎. 𝙊𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙍𝙚𝙣𝙯 𝘼𝙡𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙩 𝘿. 𝙎𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙯—shared the knowledge, skills, and valuable insights they gained throughout the six-week immersive training under the DOST Practical Training Program.

The presentation was attended by VPRIE 𝗗𝗿. 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗚. 𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗲, URDC Director 𝗗𝗿. 𝗥𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗙. 𝗢𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗼, CRISMEd Director 𝗗𝗿. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗣. 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮, and URPO Head 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗖. 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿, who commended the scholars for their professionalism, active participation, and meaningful contributions during their training.

“𝘼 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙖𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠.”

With profound sadness, the Mathematics community joins the family, friends, colleagues, former students, scholars, and loved ones of Dr. Editha Yap-Sillorequez in mourning her passing.

Doc Edith devoted her life to Mathematics education, mentorship, scholarship, and service. Her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support touched generations of educators and students, whose lives continue to bear the imprint of her guidance.

Though she may no longer walk beside us, her legacy lives on in every learner she inspired and every community she helped build.

We warmly invite the WVSU community, colleagues, retired faculty members, alumni, friends, and loved ones to join us in the Holy Mass and Necrological Service as we celebrate the life and legacy of Doc Edith.

This is a reminder for all examinees of the WVSU BS Applied Mathematics Aptitude Test (APMAT) and Interview happening tomorrow, May 23, 2026.

📍 Venue: Quezon Hall, WVSU Main Campus
🕒 APMAT Schedule: 9:00AM – 10:30AM
🕐 Interview Schedule: 10:30AM – 12:00NN and 1:00PM – 5:00PM

✅ IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
- Arrive by 8:30AM or earlier to locate your assigned room and attend the orientation.
- The test will begin promptly at 9:00AM and end at 10:30AM. No extension of time will be given to late arrivals.
- Bring all required documents with you for submission and verification.
- Bring pens and pencils (scratch papers will be provided).
- Calculators or any electronic devices are strictly PROHIBITED.
- Wear comfortable and appropriate clothing, considering the warm weather.

📢 𝗪𝗩𝗦𝗨 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗕𝗦 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲

The Mathematics Department of the College of Arts and Sciences, West Visayas State University, successfully conducted the BS Applied Mathematics Proposal Defense last May 18, 2026, at the VPRIE Conference Room, Research and Extension Building, WVSU.

A total of eight (8) research proposals from various areas of mathematics were presented by the third-year BS Applied Mathematics students and were successfully approved for conduct.

The activity showcased the students’ developing research competencies, critical thinking, and commitment to producing meaningful and relevant mathematical studies.

The Mathematics Department warmly congratulates all student-researchers for successfully defending their proposed research topics. Your hard work, preparation, and perseverance have paid off, and we look forward to the successful completion of your studies.

We also extend our appreciation to Dr. Geneveve P. Lachica, course facilitator for Fundamentals of Research, for her guidance throughout the research process, and to Dr. Shirley D. Cabico, Chair of the Mathematics Department, for her continued support in strengthening the department’s research initiatives.

🎉 𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗬 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗪𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡 𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗬!

Today, the WVSU Mathematics Department proudly joins the global celebration of 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝘿𝙖𝙮 — an occasion established in 2019 to recognize and honor the invaluable contributions of women in the field of Mathematics.
This celebration is held in honor of Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani (center), the first woman to receive the Fields Medal, the highest distinction in Mathematics, for “her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.” The date, May 12, commemorates her birth in 1977. Mirzakhani was a professor at Stanford University and earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University.

We also recognize the remarkable women mathematicians featured in this year’s poster (from left to right):

• 𝗘𝗺𝗺𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 (1882–1935), a German mathematician whose groundbreaking work in abstract algebra and theoretical physics transformed modern mathematics. Her famous Noether’s Theorem established the deep connection between symmetry and conservation laws.

• 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗻𝗮 𝗩𝗶𝗮𝘇𝗼𝘃𝘀𝗸𝗮 (born December 2, 1984), a Ukrainian mathematician known for her work in sphere packing, who was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022.

• 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗴 (born 1987), a Chinese mathematician recognized for her significant contributions to harmonic analysis and partial differential equations. In 2024, she became one of the recipients of the Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize.

• 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻 (1918–2020), an African American mathematician whose calculations were critical to NASA’s early space missions. Her work helped advance aeronautics and space exploration, earning her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

These women have made lasting contributions to Mathematics and continue to inspire future generations of learners, educators, and researchers. ✨
