Upper gastrointestinal bleeding can be dangerous even in small amounts that occur in a long period of time for it can lead to problems such as anemia or low blood counts. If not managed properly it can lead to severe complications such as respiratory distress, myocardial infarction, infection, shock or even death.
Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a common problem that results in substantial morbidity, mortality and medical care cost. Major causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding include esophageal varices, gastritis, peptic ulcers, inflammation and cancer.
