DCAP-BTLS
TRAUMA RAPID ASSESSMENT

DCAP-BTLS is a mnemonic used in emergency medicine to help first responders remember what to look for during a physical assessment of a trauma patient, specifically focusing on soft tissue injuries. It stands for Deformities, Contusions, Abrasions, Penetrations/Punctures, Burns, Tenderness, Lacerations, and Swelling.

Here's a breakdown of each component:
Deformities: Any abnormal shape or alignment of a body part.

Contusions: Bruises, indicating damage to blood vessels under the skin.

Abrasions: Scrapes or superficial damage to the skin.

Penetrations/Punctures: Wounds that pierce the skin, potentially damaging underlying tissues.

Burns: Injuries caused by heat, chemicals, or electricity.

Tenderness: Pain or discomfort upon palpation (touching).

Lacerations: Cuts or tears in the skin.

Swelling: An increase in the size of a body part, often due to fluid buildup.

By systematically checking for these signs, emergency responders can quickly identify potential injuries and prioritize treatment.
