CALCICORE Named Champion in Agriculture Category at PCCI BIDA 2026
TAGUIG CITY, Philippines – West Visayas State University (WVSU) once again made its mark in the national business innovation arena as CALCICORE, an agriculture-based innovation developed by students from the College of Business and Management, was named Champion in the Agriculture Category of the 20th Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Idea and Development Award (PCCI BIDA) 2026.
CALCICORE reached the national finals after a highly competitive screening process involving 80 entries from colleges and universities across the country. From these entries, only 15 teams advanced to the face-to-face final judging held on September 22, 2026, in Taguig City.
In the Agriculture Category, CALCICORE competed against PROCAGOLD of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines–Claveria Campus and ANI-Konekta of Our Lady of Fatima University–Nueva Ecija Campus.
The Agriculture Category was evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges composed of Atty. Ceazar Ryan Aquino, Assistant Vice President for Business Development and Public Policy of Aboitiz Foods; Mr. Hoover S. Picar, Area Vice President for South Luzon and Operations Manager of Goldstar Agri-Vet Corporation; and Mr. Juanito R. Ho, Chief Executive Officer of the Brookside Group of Companies.
CALCICORE presents an innovative approach to transforming an underutilized marine resource into value-added applications for agriculture. The concept responds to concerns on resource recovery, waste utilization, and the continuing need for practical and sustainable solutions within the agricultural sector.
The CALCICORE team is composed of student innovators John Philip Oberio, Kyle Miguel Cabaobao, Alicia Amor Cerrudo, Trisha Nicole Platigue, and LJ Balinton, with Nichol John J. Raymundo and Mia Guartilla serving as coaches.
During the final presentation, the team highlighted the potential of CALCICORE as both an agricultural innovation and a viable business concept. The presentation focused on the problem it seeks to address, its proposed solution, potential users, market opportunities, and the value it may create for the agriculture sector and local communities.
From 80 initial entries nationwide, CALCICORE became one of only 15 teams selected for the national finals and ultimately emerged as Champion in the Agriculture Category.
The achievement reflects months of research, development, mentoring, preparation, and teamwork. More importantly, it demonstrates how student-led innovation can respond to environmental and agricultural concerns by creating new value from resources that are often overlooked or discarded.
At the heart of CALCICORE is a simple but meaningful idea: materials commonly regarded as waste can still have productive value when combined with research, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
As the team conveyed during its presentation:

CALCICORE’s championship victory adds another milestone to West Visayas State University’s continuing pursuit of innovation, entrepreneurship, and student excellence on the national stage.

The College of Business and Management Graduate School Student Council (CBMGSSC) hosted "EXECUTIVE NEXUS 2026: Orient, Learn, and Connect" to strengthen fellowship and inspire academic growth across the student body.

The event took place on September 19, 2026, bringing together graduate studentss at Sam’s 21 Hotel along Diversion Road in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Dean Raymund B. Moreno officially opened the gathering by emphasizing that advanced studies serve as a gateway to continuous learning and lifelong professional connections.

Guest speaker Dr. Mohd Raziff Bin Jamaluddin of Universiti Teknologi MARA demonstrated how technological tools can streamline research publication workflows, accelerate complex data analysis, and elevate overall academic output.

Navigating the academic path, Associate Dean Cristy R. Pagente oriented students on the essential curriculum structures and graduate school requirements.

The program transitioned into an energetic acquaintance event featuring interactive and collaborative team activities designed to build lasting networks.

Dressed in crisp business attire, attendees celebrated the start of their graduate journey while establishing a vibrant support network for the academic year ahead.

He highlighted that while AI can assist researchers in generating ideas, organizing information, and supporting various research tasks, it should not replace the researcher’s own critical thinking and judgment.
Dr. Jamaluddin also underscored the importance of clearly defining the scope, resources, and tools needed in conducting research. Establishing these boundaries allows researchers to maximize the potential of AI while maintaining accuracy, relevance, and integrity in their work.

Research goes beyond the confines of academic institutions as the College of Business and Management (CBM) brings together researchers, faculty members, and stakeholders for Research Café: Beyond Boundaries, themed “Transforming Research Through AI, Innovation, Sustainability, and Collaboration,” September 18, at the WVSU URDC Building.
The whole-day event features discussions on research performance, artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted research, collaborative ideation, and action planning, emphasizing how research can respond to real-world problems and create meaningful contributions to communities.
𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲
During the event, Vice President for Research, Innovation and Extension, Dr. Greta C. Gabinete highlighted CBM’s research performance based on its records from 2021 to 2025, noting a 75 percent increase in research projects, from 12 to 21.
The increase reflects the college’s continuing efforts to strengthen its research culture and expand research initiatives through collaboration.
Gabinete underscored that stronger industry and community partnerships are essential to sustaining research growth and turning academic work into meaningful community impact.
Research, however, was framed as more than the production of academic papers. Participants were encouraged to consider how research can improve community life and contribute knowledge that addresses actual needs and concerns.
𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹
The importance of having a clear research direction was also emphasized during the discussions, particularly in the use of emerging technologies.
Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Raziff Bin Jamaluddin stressed that researchers must first establish what they want to accomplish before relying on artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological tools.
“You have to set your goal, what you want to do,” he said, underscoring the importance of purpose and direction in the research process.
AI should support that direction rather than replace the researcher’s role. Participants were reminded to “make AI your assistant; don’t make AI dictate you,” reinforcing the need for human judgment throughout the research process.
𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
The resource session led by Dr Jamaluddin, Head of Corporate Communication and Event Management at the Institute of Business Excellence, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), explored how AI can be incorporated into different stages of research.
The discussion presented a framework that begins with identifying a real-world problem and moves through discovery, understanding, design, investigation, and impact before generating new research questions.
AI can assist researchers in discovering possible research topics, scanning existing literature and concepts, and organizing studies through an AI-assisted literature matrix.
Yet, technological assistance does not remove the need for researchers to critically examine information. AI-generated outputs must still be verified, evaluated, and subjected to human validation before being used in research.
𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿
Alongside AI integration, the session placed human judgment and research ethics at the center of the process.
While AI can help researchers work through information more efficiently, decisions regarding research questions, methodology, interpretation, and conclusions remain the responsibility of the researcher.
The approach encourages researchers to view AI as a research aid rather than an authority, ensuring that technological convenience does not come at the expense of accuracy, ethics, and critical thinking.
𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀, 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Following the resource speaker’s talk, participants engaged in an open forum and discussion before proceeding to collaborative research ideation and action planning.
The activity allows participants to transform insights from the discussions into possible research ideas and collaborative initiatives, reinforcing the role of partnerships in sustaining research efforts.
Through Research Café: Beyond Boundaries, CBM highlights a research culture that moves beyond conventional academic boundaries connecting AI and innovation with human expertise, sustainability, and collaboration to transform research ideas into work that can respond to communities and real-world challenges.

Prof. Dr. Mohd Raziff Bin Jamaluddin, Head of Corporate Communication and Event Management at the Institute of Business Excellence, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Selangor, Malaysia, as our distinguished Visiting Professor.
