𝐌𝐬. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨, a faculty member of the Department of Physical Education, College of Arts and Sciences, has brought pride to the university after receiving international recognition at the 20th World Congress of the International Association for Physical Education and Sports for Girls and Women (IAPESGW) held in Cebu City, Philippines, where she was awarded the IAPESGW Kluka Love Young Researcher Award for her outstanding presentation of the study titled “Kicking Gender Norms: Mixed-Gender Football as an Innovative Platform for Equity and Empowerment in Philippine Sport.”

Co-authored with Ma. Delrose Duran and Axcel Florentino, Franco’s classmates in the Master of Science in Human Movement Science program at the College of Human Kinetics, UP Diliman, the study explored the experiences and perspectives of athletes in mixed-gender football settings. It highlighted how the sport serves as a transformative space for inclusivity, equality, and empowerment—challenging traditional gender norms and fostering collaboration between male and female athletes.

Currently on study leave, Ms. Franco is pursuing her Master of Science in Human Movement Science major in Exercise Science at the College of Human Kinetics, University of the Philippines Diliman.

The IAPESGW Kluka Love Young Researcher Award celebrates the passion, vision, and commitment of emerging scholars who are shaping a more equitable future for girls and women in sport and physical education. Created in honor of Dr. Darlene Kluka and Dr. Phyllis Love, two phenomenal leaders who dedicated their lives to mentoring others and advancing gender equity, this award recognizes young researchers whose work embodies courage, curiosity, and care.

The award is presented to an outstanding presenter under 35 years old who delivers the best research presentation during the Congress, exemplifying excellence in scholarly contribution and innovation toward gender equity in sport and physical education.

The IAPESGW World Congress, held every four years, gathers educators, scholars, and practitioners from around the world to promote gender equity and leadership among women in sport and physical education. The 2025 World Congress carried the theme “Equity in Action,”underscoring the importance of translating research into meaningful practice that fosters fairness and inclusion in diverse sporting contexts.

Franco’s recognition through the Kluka Love Young Researcher Award highlights UP Visayas’ and UP Diliman’s continued commitment to empowering educators, advancing research, and promoting gender equity in Philippine sport and education.
