Doaneans were immersed in the world of stories during the “𝐎𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐔𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞“ storytelling sessions, a highlight of this year’s Book Month celebration. Teachers from every set of learners led the sessions, bringing both Filipino and English stories to life for learners across the campus.

The event, held at Doane campus, emphasized the importance of storytelling in building imagination, empathy, and hope. Through engaging narratives, learners were reminded how a single story can inspire and connect a room full of young hearts.

“Stories allow us to imagine, feel, and connect with one another,” shared Ma’am Nicole Coleen Sulleza, one of the participating teachers. “Through these sessions, we hope to nurture a lifelong love for reading and storytelling.”

This year’s Book Month celebration carried the theme:

Grade 10 learners showcased their storytelling skills in the “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓” contest, facilitated by English teacher Sir John Chino Cudo, held on November 27, 2025 at the Doane Conservatorium Integrated School, Inc. The event was part of the Book Month celebration, with this year’s theme: “𝐓𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐁𝐮𝐤𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐮𝐧𝐨̂ 𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐠-𝐀𝐬𝐚”, highlighting the role of reading and storytelling in nurturing hope and imagination among the youth.

“Storytelling is not just an English activity. It is a gift, a mirror, and a bridge,” said Sir Cudo. “It helps us understand ourselves, connect with others, and see the world with kinder eyes.”

Participants brought their stories to life through expressive gestures, dynamic tones, and heartfelt performances, reflecting the celebration’s aim of fostering Academic Excellence, Artistic Expression, and Ardent Godly Living, in line with Doane’s core values.

“I felt nervous at first, but telling my story made me realize how much fun it is to share ideas with others,” said Arturo Ren Ezekiel Tirador, the contest champion.

Santa Barbara, Iloilo — Nov. 17, 2025

Learners from Doane Conservatorium Integrated School, Inc. joined the Santa Barbara community on Monday to commemorate the 127th Cry of Santa Barbara at the Santa Barbara Football Field. The annual event honors the 1898 uprising when locals first raised the Philippine flag outside Luzon, marking a stand for unity and independence.

The celebration also featured the “𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐨 𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐡𝐢 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓”, part of the 𝟐𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐊𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥, showcasing traditional Filipino games such as sack race, kadang-kadang, tug-of-war, Chinese garter, palo sebo, and dakpanay manok. The activities promoted sportsmanship, camaraderie, and cultural pride among secondary learners from across the municipality.

Doanean learners joined the competitions alongside peers from other schools. According to school representatives, participating in the event strengthens community engagement and helps learners connect classroom lessons with local history.

The municipal government plans to continue integrating cultural activities with historical commemorations to foster youth awareness and preserve Santa Barbara’s role in the nation’s story.

Grade 10 learners at Doane Conservatorium Integrated School, Inc. experienced storytelling like never before in the “𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬” workshop, held Thursday at the DCISI campus on Delgado St., Santa Barbara. The workshop, led by English teacher Mr. John Chino E. Cudo, aimed to teach learners that storytelling is as much about emotion and authenticity as it is about words.

“Storytelling is not about memorizing lines,” said Mr. Cudo. “It is about understanding the soul behind every story and letting yourself feel it. When you feel it, your audience will feel it too.”

The session opened with the icebreaker “Lights, Camera, Emotion!” Learners watched short film clips and mirrored the characters’ emotions, discovering how subtle expressions can convey powerful feelings.

“It was not just fun. It made me realize that acting and storytelling are about honesty,” shared Zeke, one of the learners who impressed everyone with his dedication and emotional delivery.

Instead of performing their assigned stories, the learners focused on techniques that make storytelling authentic, including voice variation, facial expressions, audience connection, and sincerity. The workshop prepared them for the upcoming 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 contest on November 25, part of the Book Month Celebration 2025, themed “𝐓𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐠-𝐚𝐬𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐁𝐮𝐤𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐮𝐧𝐨 𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐠-𝐚𝐬𝐚.”

“I wanted to show them that emotions are not weaknesses,” Mr. Cudo added. “They are what connect a story to the human heart.”

By the end of the session, learners left inspired, ready to tell stories with honesty, courage, and empathy.

SANTA BARBARA, Iloilo — Young writers and teachers from Doane Brilliant Child Learning Haven, Inc. (DBCLH) honed their journalistic skills during the 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 held on November 8, 2025, at Santa Barbara Central Elementary School.

The one-day workshop brought together campus journalists and publication advisers from different schools across the district to develop their skills in writing, editing, and managing school publications.

For the teachers’ training, invited speakers shared their expertise on key aspects of publication work. 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐎𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐨, 𝐑𝐍, discussed Leadership and Management in School Publication, emphasizing the adviser’s vital role as a mentor and leader. 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐲 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧̃𝐨𝐬 conducted a session on Proofreading and Editing, stressing the value of accuracy and coherence in written outputs, while 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐡 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐧 lectured on Layout and Design, guiding participants on how to balance creativity and readability in print media.

Meanwhile, the student training covered various journalism categories, with distinguished trainers from the local and national press. 𝐌𝐫. 𝐑𝐣𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫, news writer at The Daily Guardian and chairperson of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines–Iloilo Chapter, facilitated News Writing (English). For News Writing (Filipino), the session was led by 𝐌𝐫. 𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐚 𝐉𝐫., school paper adviser of The Pebbles (Ateneo de Iloilo–Santa Maria Catholic School) and recipient of the Esteban Javellana Award for Creative Writing. The Feature Writing category was handled by 𝐌𝐬. 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞, editor-in-chief of Forum-Dimensions, West Visayas State University.

Representing Doane’s young journalists were 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚, who won 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐑𝐃 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐄 in Column Writing (English); 𝐀𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐡 𝐅𝐚𝐲𝐞 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐨 in News Writing (English); 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐚 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐨 in News Writing (Filipino); 𝐑𝐢𝐳 𝐀𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐉𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐨 in Sports Writing (English); 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐉𝐨𝐞𝐦 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐚 in Editorial Cartooning (Filipino); and 𝐘𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐅𝐞𝐢 𝐒𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐨 in Photojournalism (English).

The learners were accompanied by their supportive advisers, Ma’am Nicole Coleen Sulleza and Ma’am Aileen Marie Serisola, who also participated in the training sessions for publication advisers.

The event not only recognized the learners’ growing excellence in campus journalism but also equipped teachers and students alike to pursue ethical and responsible reporting.
