Looking Back, Moving Forward.

We are looking ahead to the future with so much pride in our hearts! Years from now, this incredible milestone will undoubtedly stand out as a defining moment.

Our very own Thea Anne Mendozawill soon be taking all the inspiration, growth, and magic from the Uniting Asia Residency Programme at the Asian Youth Theatre Festival with YATTA (Youth Advocates Through Theater Arts) and carrying it forward into everything she does.

Watching her represent not just our university, but the heart of Western Visayas on an international stage, is a beautiful testament to the power of looking back at our cultural roots while moving forward toward global horizons.

As the culminating event wraps up, we know this isn't an ending. It's the beginning of a whole new chapter. By looking back at the rich history and traditions shared by artists across Asia, Thea and the rest of the residency cohort are moving forward as a united creative force, equipped with new perspectives and a shared vision for the future of theatre.

Thea, your TeatroTayo family will always be right here, cheering you on as you look back at how far you've come and move forward into greatness. We cannot wait to see how this experience will shape your future stages! ๐ŸŽญ๐ŸŒโœจ

Fly high, Thea! Padayon! ๐Ÿš€

From the bustling energy of the Asian Youth Theatre Festival to the quiet, grounding magic of Dumagueteโ€™s nature.

In the middle of intense creative collaboration and being with brilliant artists across Asia for the Uniting Asia Residency Programme of the Asian Youth Theatre Festival, participants took a collective breath.

Theater isnโ€™t just made on stages or in rehearsal rooms; itโ€™s fed by the world around us.

Feeling incredibly inspired, deeply rooted, and so grateful for this journey you have given our alderperson Thea Anne Mendoza, AYTF and YATTA (Youth Advocates Through Theater Arts).

Madamu guid nga salamat!

Today was all about disconnecting from the script and reconnecting with the earth. In the middle of intense creative collaboration and uniting with brilliant artists across Asia for the SIA Residency, we took a collective breath. There is something incredibly grounding about feeling the Dumaguete breeze, listening to the rustle of the trees, and realizing that nature speaks a universal languageโ€”just like theatre. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒŠ

Thank you for proudly representing WVSU TeatroTayo, Thea Anne Mendoza!

Theater is indeed a sacred space where human story breathes in the exact same room as the audience. Therefore, keeping your passion alive ensures that this shared, living heartbeat never goes quiet.

Another inspiring group of artists joins the Uniting Asia Residency Programme 2026!

Let's welcome:

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Thea Mendoza from WVSU TeatroTayo, Philippines
๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Harshika Kaur from Taylor's University Malaysia โ€“ Bachelors of Performing Arts, Malaysia

Today, we remember and honor the birth anniversary of Ramon A. Obusan, National Artist for Dance. A visionary who dedicated his life to the preservation, study, and celebration of Philippine dance and cultural heritage.

His work transcended performance, becoming a living archive of the Filipino spirit and identity.

Ramon A. Obusanโ€™s passion for cultural preservation continues to inspire generations of artists, scholars, and cultural workers to cherish and uphold the nationโ€™s diverse heritage.

The spotlights have dimmed, the music has faded, and the chairs are packed away, but our hearts remain completely full. We would like to extend our deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to Oncรฉ and their amazing team for opening up their sacred space to WVSU TeatroTayo this Pride Month.

By giving us a platform to present g(r)ey matter(s), you didn't just give us a physical stage; you gave our whispers a microphone, our struggles validation, and our love a home. To everyone who walked through those doors, joined with so much energy and love, sat with us in the dark, wept during First to Go, and stood on their feet for our grand finale, thank you for making our stories matter.

This successful run would not have been possible without the overwhelming wave of solidarity from our community. To our beloved WVSU TeatroTayo alumni, thank you for coming home and reminding us of the foundation we stand on. To our constant TeatroTayo supporters from West Visayas State University students, and ONCร‰ regulars, thank you for always filling the front rows and believing in our art.

We also extend our gratitude to our fellow local theater groups for showing up in full force, CALL LAB, USA Little Theater, Teatro Sinag, and to the activist groups and LGBTQIA+ advocates who held the space with us. Your presence proved that this production wasn't just a performance, it was a collective protest and a shared sanctuary.

There is absolutely no stopping us now, especially after recently being named the Most Outstanding University-Based Organization at WVSU. Receiving this humbling award has only fueled our fire and encouraged us to move forward with even greater purpose, pushing the boundaries of what university/community theater can achieve.

We created g(r)ey matter(s) to remind everyone that defiance is often found in the quiet architecture of our survival, and in the centimeters of space we reclaim every single day. To every young q***r person who watched our show and saw a piece of their own hidden reality on that stage, please know that you are not a phase, you are not a tragedy, and you are never alone. Do not let a heteronormative world force you back into the shadows, and never let them reduce your beautiful love into a whisper. You were fearlessly and masterfully designed. The mariposa has broken the glass, we are staying under the sun, and we are never asking for permission to exist ever again.

As a final note, thank you for keeping Ilonggo theater alive, thriving, and fiercely revolutionary. Until the next curtain call, Iloilo.

Happy Pride Month!
