𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 | Kuwentong Student Assistant

Behind every Student Assistant is a story—a story of 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. 💙💛

For four years, from 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟵 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟯, 𝗠𝗿. 𝗝𝗮𝘆 𝗖. 𝗟𝗶𝘇𝗮 served as a Student Assistant in the 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿
𝗟𝗮𝗯-𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗧 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺. His experience as an SA became more than just an opportunity to gain work experience while studying—it became a turning point that changed the direction of his career and interests.

Through the people he worked with, particularly 𝗗𝗿. 𝗕𝗼𝗯𝗯𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗼 and 𝗦𝗶𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀, and the experiences he gained along the way, he developed a deeper interest in 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, shifting his career path from Social Science to the field he is now part of.

Today, Mr. Liza serves as an 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗩 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗜𝗦 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿 at 𝗪𝗩𝗦𝗨-𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀, carrying with him the lessons, connections, and work ethics he developed during his years as a Student Assistant.

His story reminds us that being an SA can open doors we never expected. It can help us 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀, while sometimes leading us toward a career path we never imagined.

After two years of sustained student-led advocacy and collaborative work across the University, the 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 of 𝐖𝐕𝐒𝐔 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 is finally here: 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 ₱𝟐𝟓 𝐭𝐨 ₱𝟕𝟕 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫, 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐀𝐘 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔–𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟕.

𝑨 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑾𝑽𝑺𝑼 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑨𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔

From benchmarking and proposal development through consultations with various University offices to Board of Regents approval—two years of purposeful advocacy have led to this meaningful breakthrough.

Effective First Semester, AY 2026–2027, the hourly rate of West Visayas State University Student Assistants will increase from ₱25.00 to ₱77.00 per hour.

This is more than an increase in compensation. It is 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 who help sustain the daily operations of offices and services across WVSU. The University’s Citizen’s Charter recognizes Student Assistantship as an Office of Student Affairs service across the Main Campus and several WVSU campuses—affirming its important role in supporting students and University operations.

This milestone was made possible through 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭, 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞, and 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐞. It reflects what can be achieved 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐝 and 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲.

𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 | 𝗞𝘂𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁

For four years as a Student Assistant at the Central Science Laboratory, 𝗠𝘀. 𝗟𝘂𝗱𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 gained more than work experience—she developed skills and values that continue to guide her in her professional journey.

Her experience as a working student taught her the importance of 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Balancing academics and work helped her learn how to manage multiple tasks, adapt to a busy office environment, and interact with different kinds of people.

Today, she serves as an 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗩 (𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗜𝗜) where the lessons she gained as a Student Assistant continue to be valuable. Looking back, she considers her experience as a working student an advantage that prepared her early for the realities of the professional world and taught her the value of hard work.

Her message to fellow Student Assistants is simple yet meaningful: the journey may be difficult and filled with sacrifices, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽. Stay flexible, learn from every challenge, work hard, study well, and keep moving toward your dreams. The struggles you face today can become your strength in the future.

Following the vibrant opening of the festivities on August 10, the Association of Student Assistants continued to welcome students to a booth filled with fun, opportunities, and meaningful connections.

From the playful challenges of Hampang Perya, to capturing memories at the Photo Booth, and exploring opportunities through Job Hire, every visit became a chance to engage, connect, and be part of the growing 𝑾𝑬𝑺𝑻𝑰𝑽𝑨𝑳 celebration.

During her years as a Student Assistant at the College of Medicine, 𝗠𝘀. 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗠. 𝗕𝗮𝗷𝗮𝗻
discovered that her role served as a vital training ground for her future. Through this experience, she developed essential clerical and communication skills that continue to support her in her current professional journey.

She regards being a Student Assistant at WVSU as a meaningful privilege and encourages current students to do their work well and learn from every experience. According to her, these lessons become especially valuable when transitioning into the workforce after graduation.

Her story demonstrates how dedication and excellence in campus service help build the character needed for lifelong success.

InsideOut: Labor and Honor — WVSU-ASA 2nd General Assembly

The WVSU-ASA gathered at the Center for Teaching Education (CTE) on February 20, 2026, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for its 2nd General Assembly with the theme, “Amidst the Noise: Finding Stillness in Lives that Never Pause.”

The session began with a heartfelt message from Atty. Maybelle de la Gente, Guidance Counselor III of WVSU, where she encouraged everyone to listen to their inner voice and nurture their mental health.

To raise awareness regarding the processing of DTRs and Accomplishment Reports, Ms. Jhena Mae Berlin from the Office of Student Affairs facilitated a discussion on the guidelines for the submission of the Daily Time Record. Questions were accommodated to ensure every student assistant clearly understood the procedures. For further clarification, Sir Aris Larroder, WVSU-ASA Adviser, also shared his insights and related experiences in response to the concerns raised.

One of the highlights of the event was the empowering talk by Sir Agustin Estoque titled, “When Stress Becomes Too Much: Let’s Take Care of Me!” He discussed self-awareness, healthy coping strategies, and the courage to pause, breathe, and seek support when needed, supported by research-based information on stress.

Through shared insights and meaningful reflections, the event concluded successfully, reminding everyone that amidst responsibilities and expectations, taking care of oneself is not a weakness — it is strength.
