This Dengue Awareness Month, we proudly recognize our alumni at Talacogon District Hospital (TDH) for championing public health on the provincial government's D.I.O. Hour broadcast!

Alvin Jake B. Aleman (Nurse I) emphasized that "prevention is better than cure," urging parents and schools to actively clean their surroundings and clear stagnant water to stop mosquito breeding.

Keith Lyan E. Talingdan (Nurse I & IPC Personnel) reminded everyone to stay vigilant against dengue and highlighted vital hospital infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene, appropriate PPE use, and regular environmental disinfection.

We applaud your dedication to educating the public and keeping the community safe! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉบ

In line with our commitment to continuous professional development, we highlight Asst. Prof. Val Clinton S. Maybituinโ€™s recent completion of the ๐˜ฝ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™˜๐™ 7 UPCN Nurse LEAD: ๐™‡๐™š๐™–๐™™๐™š๐™ง๐™จ๐™๐™ž๐™ฅ ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™จ๐™š ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐˜ผ๐™™๐™ซ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š๐™™ ๐™‹๐™ง๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜๐™š ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™‹๐™ช๐™—๐™ก๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™–๐™ก๐™ฉ๐™ ๐™‰๐™ช๐™ง๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ (Year 5).

Selected as a scholar, Asst. Prof. Maybituin undertook this advanced program spearheaded by the UP College of Nursing (a WHO Collaborating Center for Leadership in Nursing Development) in partnership with the Johnson & Johnson Foundation. Designed to equip educators with strategic leadership skills for public health management, the comprehensive blended curriculum required rigorous online asynchronous coursework and synchronous virtual sessions. The training culminated in an onsite face-to-face intensive from June 1โ€“3, 2026, at the UP College of Nursing, Manila.

By joining a growing cadre of distinguished faculty who have completed this programโ€”including prior NurseLEAD scholars Asst. Prof. Betsy Sabdani (Year 4) and Asst. Prof. Froilan Macapil (Year 3)โ€”his achievement reinforces our institution's academic rigor. This continued faculty advancement elevates the standard of education provided to our future nursing professionals and empowers our educators to

Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), through the College of Health Sciences (CHS), continues to strengthen its global footprint by successfully hosting the 2nd Batch of international delegates from the Nursing Professionals Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Indonesia. From April 27 to May 10, 2026, this intensive two-week program centered on the International Elective Community Placement: Patient Assessment and Nursing Care, fostering a high-level exchange of clinical expertise and healthcare innovation.

A hallmark of this exchange was the comprehensive clinical and community immersion, where students were integrated into local healthcare settings to apply their skills in real-world scenarios. This hands-on experience was complemented by a specialized seminar on Community Mental Health Psychosocial Support (MHPSS): Philippine Perspective, led by Dr. Alma Maranda, providing the delegates with a deep understanding of psychosocial resilience and localized care. To balance their academic journey, the cohort participated in an Iligan City Tour, immersing themselves in the cultural heritage and natural beauty of the "City of Majestic Waterfalls." The program concluded with a formal Closing Ceremony, celebrating the successful immersion, professional growth, and the enduring partnership between MSU-IIT and UMY. Selamat tinggal!

MSU-IIT College of Health Sciences Strengthens Global Nursing Education Through Community Mental Health Collaboration with Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Indonesia

The College of Health Sciences of Mindanao State Universityโ€“Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), through its Nursing Program, proudly hosted a significant academic and international collaborative event on May 8, 2026: the Community Mental Health Case Presentation in partnership with the School of Nursing of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Indonesia.

Held at College of Health Sciences, the event served as a dynamic platform for Level 4 Nursing students from UMY to present comprehensive family mental health assessments conducted within the context of Iligan City, Philippines. This scholarly undertaking formed an essential component of their course completion requirements, while simultaneously fostering international cooperation, cross-cultural learning, and evidence-based nursing practice.

The collaboration exemplified the shared commitment of MSU-IIT and UMY to advancing nursing education beyond borders by integrating global perspectives into community and public health practice. Through their presentations, UMY nursing students demonstrated their ability to analyze family mental health concerns using holistic frameworks, while thoughtfully incorporating culturally informed intervention strategies from the Indonesian perspective. Their work highlighted innovative approaches to family-centered care, mental health promotion, disease prevention, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The program was formally opened by Dr. Kellyana Irawati, UMY Supervisor, followed by Dr. Neil M. Martin, PhD, MAN, RN, MBED, MSU-IIT Supervisor, whose leadership and mentorship played a pivotal role in guiding the studentsโ€™ academic and professional development throughout the program.

Dr. Neil Martin emphasized the importance of international academic partnerships in shaping globally competent nurses equipped with the skills to address complex community health challenges through culturally responsive, systems-oriented approaches.

A major highlight of the event was the expert panel discussion and question-and-answer segment led by:

- Assist. Prof. Froilan Jan S. Macapil, MN, RN, LPT
- Assist. Prof. Betsy D. Sabdani, MAN, RN

Assist. Prof. Macapil enriched the discussion by sharing valuable expertise in Community and Public Health Nursing, particularly through the lens of systems thinking and holistic family care. He underscored the critical role of family dynamics in understanding, managing, and preventing diagnosed health problems, emphasizing that family structures, relationships, and social determinants are fundamental components in both mental health promotion and comprehensive nursing interventions.

His discussion further highlighted how effective nursing care must extend beyond symptom management to include broader family systems, resilience-building, and preventive health strategiesโ€”reinforcing the value of integrating family nursing theories into community mental health practice.

Meanwhile, Assist. Prof. Betsy Sabdani reinforced the indispensable role of comprehensive assessment, collaborative practice, and partnership-building in delivering sustainable health interventions. Her insights strengthened the studentsโ€™ understanding of evidence-based community engagement and interprofessional cooperation.

The successful conduct of this case presentation reflects the College of Health Sciencesโ€™ commitment to excellence in nursing education, global engagement, and transformative learning experiences. More importantly, it showcases the power of international academic collaboration in preparing future nurses to address public health and mental health concerns with compassion, cultural sensitivity, and professional competence.

This partnership between MSU-IIT and UMY stands as a testament to the shared vision of nurturing globally responsive nursing leaders who are capable of bridging theory and practice, strengthening communities, and promoting health across diverse populations.

As MSU-IIT College of Health Sciences continues to foster strategic international collaborations, initiatives such as this reinforce its role as a leader in innovative nursing education, community empowerment, and global health advancement.
