LGU - Iligan City supports BS Microelectronics Engineering of MSUIT

BS Microelectronics Engineering, Ania Na sa MSU-IIT! First in the Country! 🇵🇭✨

A historical milestone in education and technology was officially announced by Dr. Jefferson "Jeff" Hora during our flag ceremony last Monday—the opening of the BS Microelectronics Engineering program at MSU-IIT, the very first in the entire Philippines!

We are immensely proud of Dr. Jeff Hora—a home-grown Iliganon and recipient of the prestigious Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino Award—for his visionary work in bringing this pioneering field home. Through his leadership, Iligan is now taking center stage as the national hub for semiconductor innovation and integrated circuit (IC) design.

Through this new degree program, our students will learn to design the "brains" of future technology—from microchips in smartphones to advanced energy-harvesting systems that draw power straight from Wi-Fi signals without needing power banks.

To turn this vision into long-term economic growth, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Iligan fully supports this endeavor and is actively pushing forward with the construction of the Knowledge, Innovation, and Science Technology (KIST) Park. The KIST Park will provide the dedicated space and infrastructure needed to bring high-tech industry investors, research labs, and top-tier jobs directly to our city.

Our youth no longer need to leave Iligan to pursue world-class careers in high technology. The talent is here, the vision is set, and the future is being built right here at home!

Rather than pursuing a career abroad after training in Taiwan and Australia, Dr. Jefferson A. Hora, Director of the Center for Integrated Circuits Design and Dean of the College of Engineering at MSU-IIT, returned home to build Mindanao’s next generation of chip designers.
Named one of the 2026 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos, Dr. Hora spearheaded the BS Microelectronics Engineering program and bridged academia with industry—aiming to make Mindanao a thriving hub for high-value semiconductor jobs.

Tabucan, along with Provincial SSF Coordinator Engr. Daryl B. Radjac.

UTP–University Partnership Discussions

On August 18, 2026 a potential academic partnership was discussed with Prof. Noridah Osman of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Malaysia, highlighting opportunities to strengthen international collaboration in education and research during the courtesy call to the COE Dean Dr. Jefferson A. Hora.

Three possible areas of partnership were explored during the discussion. The first is the establishment of a Visiting Professorship, which could facilitate faculty exchange, lectures, and joint academic activities. The second is an UTP Student Exchange Program, providing students with opportunities for international learning and cultural exposure. The third is a PhD Dual Degree Program, which could enable qualified doctoral students to earn degrees from both participating universities and enhance research collaboration.

Dr. Noridah Binti Osman is an academic and researcher in the Chemical Engineering Department and the Center for Biofuel and Biochemical Research (CBBR) at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in Malaysia. Her work focuses on renewable materials, sustainable processes, and biomass conversion

Strengthening academic ties and regional collaboration, leaders of the Center Integrated Circuits Design and Department of Electronics Engineering conducted an official courtesy visit to the President of Camiguin Polytechnic State College (CPSC). The delegation was led by Dr. Jefferson A. Hora, Director of the Center for Integrated Circuits Design (CICD) and Dean of the MSU-IIT College of Engineering, alongside Dr. Harreez Quimque (MSU-IIT Vice Dean of the College of Engineering), Dr. Gene Fe P. Palencia (Department of Electronics Engineering), and Engr. Mike Diangco (BS Microelectronics Engineering Program Coordinator), together with the project staff Dhondee Mugot of the CHIP IP Block (Project 1 of the CICD).

Board of Investment (BOI) visits College of Engineering

Board of Investments personnel headed by the Light Manufacturing Industries Team Leader Ms. June D. Villasanta together with her group from the Chemicals and Semiconductor Sectors, visited the College of Engineering on July 22, 2026

The College of Engineering Dean Dr. Jefferson A. Hora received the group, and a short meeting was being held at the COE Microlab Conference Room. Key personnel from MSUIIT attended the meeting, namely Dr. Mark Anthony Torres – the Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives; Dr. Carlito Tabelin – the Research for Engineering and Innovative Technology (REIT) Director; Dr. Arnold Lubguban and Dr. Roberto Malaluan- the Faculty Experts from the Center for Sustainable Polymer, and Dr. Olga Joy L. Gerasta – the Radio Frequency Lab Head. After the meeting, the whole group proceeded to lab tours to the following research centers and labs: the RF Lab; the Center for Sustainable Polymer; Center for Energy Research and Technology; and the Center for Integrated Circuits Design (CICD).

The main purpose of the visit is to connect the academe research to its specific industry with the help of the BOI. Such role is crucial because it promotes investments that contributes to nation building. The mandates of the BOI are the following: (1) promoting domestic and foreign investments, (2) granting investment incentives, (3) implementing investment laws, (4) evaluating and registering investment projects, (5) developing priority industries. (6) providing investor assistance, (7) supporting regional development
