THE USE OF FISH (NILE TILAPIA OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS L.) AS A BIOINDICATOR FOR
ENDOCRINE-DISRUPTING CHEMICALS (EDCS) POLLUTION IN LAKE LANAO, PHILIPPINES
Abstract:
Lake Lanao is the second-largest freshwater lake in the country located in Southern
Philippines and considered one of the ancient lakes of the world. However, there is scarce
information regarding its endocrine-disrupting chemicals pollution status. Hence, this study
will provide baseline data that would reflect the potential pollution of endocrine-disrupting
chemicals in Lake Lanao using Nile Tilapia (O.niloticus L.) as a bioindicator. The preliminary
survey of water quality shows that Lake Lanao was polluted as shown by its high total nitrogen
content, however, there was no significant amount of OCPs detected. The histology analysis
shows that the condition factor (K) was not significantly different across the study area. There
was, however, a significant difference between GSI and HSI across the study. The
histopathological analysis of the fish liver from Lake Lanao revealed the presence of non-
specific and inflammatory alterations, toxicopathic non-neoplastic, and pre-neoplastic
alterations.
The histopathology of fish te**es from Lake Lanao revealed the presence of testicular
degeneration and interstitial (Leydig) cell hyperplasia while fish ovaries revealed the presence
of perifollicular cell hyperplasia and the pre-ovulatory atretic oocyte. The histopathological
alterations described here are not toxicant specific; however, alterations in go**ds were
identified as toxicologically relevant as indicative of potential exposure to endocrine-disrupting
chemicals. In conclusion, the overall results show that Nile Tilapia is a good bioindicator, which
provides histopathological evidence that Lake Lanao is contaminated potentially with
endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
