A graduate student from MSU-IIT Microelectronics Research Lab, Haniah L. Mohammad, has designed a D-band low-noise amplifier (LNA) covering the 110–170 GHz spectrum for 6G wireless receiver front-ends in 130-nm SiGe BiCMOS technology. To overcome the standard noise figures exceeding 5 dB in SiGe LNAs due to dominant collector shot noise, the proposed design introduces a feedforward active noise cancellation (ANC) auxiliary path in the first cascode stage—suppressing correlated shot noise while preserving signal gain. A three-stage cascode topology with single-stub transmission-line interstage matching achieves wideband gain flatness across the full D-band.The LNA yields a peak small-signal gain S21 of 33.3 dB at 156.8 GHz, a 51.5 GHz 3-dB bandwidth, and a minimum noise figure (NF) of 4.2 dB at 122 GHz while consuming only 16.4 mW. This represents the highest gain reported among 0.13-μm SiGe D-band LNAs to date. This research is published by IEEE and was presented at the 2026 9th International Conference on Circuits, Systems and Simulation (ICSS) in Bangkok, Thailand.

A graduate student from MSU-IIT (RF) Research and Design Laboratory under the umbrella of the Center for Integrated Circuits Design, MSU-IIT Microelectronics Research Lab, Leizl Caserial, has published her work on an indoor empirical characterization of an integrated SDR‑based UAV detection pipeline, focusing on false alarm rate analysis and GPS anti‑spoofing classification. The system integrates SDR‑based RF detection using NI USRP‑2932 and LabVIEW, GPS anti‑spoofing geolocation with u‑blox NEO‑M8N and Python, and real‑time GIS mapping through Folium and OpenStreetMap. Indoor calibration at the MSU‑IIT laboratory revealed interference inflation of 2.6–2.9× relative to a 3.0 dB outdoor design target, across 361,000 detection epochs. Results showed reliable false alarm rate measurements and a GPS anti‑spoofing module achieving 100% accuracy against adversarial filters, with 98% headroom below the 3.0‑second target. This study establishes foundational insights for balancing detection thresholds, false alarm rates, and GPS anti‑spoofing in UAV countermeasure systems, with Phase 2 outdoor validation to follow. The paper was published by IEEE and presented at the 2026 9th International Conference on Circuits, Systems and Simulation (ICCSS) in Bangkok, Thailand.

A graduate student from MSU-IIT Microelectronics Research Lab, Rejel Jem Sumbillo, has developed a 146‑GHz direct‑conversion passive mixer utilizing body‑bias controlled derivative superposition (DS) in 22‑nm FDSOI CMOS. By introducing an auxiliary switching quad in parallel with the conventional mixer core, the design reshapes nonlinear switching conductance to suppress third‑order distortion, achieving a peak RF‑to‑IF conversion gain of 4.66 dB at 146 GHz — a 7.5 dB improvement over conventional designs. The mixer further demonstrates a 51‑GHz bandwidth spanning 110–161 GHz, an IP1dB of −14 dBm, and operates with a 3 dBm LO drive while consuming only 14 mW at 0.8 V. This DS‑assisted switching architecture significantly enhances linearity, conversion gain, and efficiency, advancing the design of D‑band 6G receiver front‑ends. The work was published by IEEE and presented at the 2026 9th International Conference on Circuits, Systems and Simulation (ICCSS) in Bangkok, Thailand.
