[The UPD-Cambridge Philosophy Lecture Series 2026]

The UP Diliman Department of Philosophy proudly presents the return of the UPD-Cambridge Philosophy Lecture Series this 2026, and it is bigger and better than ever before!

Along with the UPD-Oxford Philosophy Lecture Series hosted every first semester, the UPD-Cambridge Lecture Series is hosted every second semester to promote the Anglo-American or analytic tradition of philosophy by inviting over scholars from two strongholds of the said tradition. Moreover, both lecture series are specifically designed to cover topics that philosophers in the Philippines ordinarily do not have access to nor familiarity with to broaden our intellectual horizons.

Join us from May to June as we bring together a variety of leading philosophical voices from the University of Cambridge for a series of engaging lectures:

โ€ข Will Hornett โ€” โ€œThe Form of Agencyโ€ (A lecture on Philosophy of Action)
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 5:00 PM, Monday, 04 May 2026

โ€ข Alexander Bird โ€” โ€œNatural Kinds in Biologyโ€ (A lecture on Metaphysics and Philosophy of Biology)
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 5:00 PM, Monday, 11 May 2026

โ€ข Michael Potter โ€” โ€œWittgensteinโ€™s Blue Bookโ€ (A lecture on The Middle Wittgenstein)
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 5:00 PM, Monday, 18 May 2026

โ€ข Sarah Fine โ€” โ€œPhilosophy of Immigrationโ€ (A lecture on Political Philosophy)
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 5:00 PM, Tuesday, 30 June 2026

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Registration is free and open to the public, and certificates of attendance will be awarded after. Kindly scan the QR code below or enter this link to register:

I was fifteen when I first sat in Maโ€™am Felicidad Beltranโ€™s class.

At that age, history to me was small and familiar, stories of our islands, names I had memorized, dates I tried not to forget. I thought I understood what history was.

Then she began to teach.

I still remember the day she spoke about the Yellow River. It was the first time I heard of a civilization so far from our shores, yet so deeply connected to our shared humanity. She did not just explain it, she brought it to life. There was fire in her voice, a kind of joy in telling us that the world was older, wider, and more beautiful than we knew.

Because of her, the map no longer looked flat. It felt alive.

There was something deeply sincere about the way she spoke of cultures, religions, philosophies, and beliefs. She handled differences with respect, almost reverence. Long before we learned words like โ€œdiversityโ€ and โ€œinclusivity,โ€ she was already teaching us to see beyond ourselves. She showed us that people may live differently, believe differently, and think differently yet remain bound by the same human longing for meaning, for belonging, for hope.

At fifteen, I did not have the language to describe what she was giving us. I only knew that I was becoming curious โ€” curious about places beyond our archipelago, curious about possibilities beyond what felt familiar. She made me realize that there was something bigger out there, and that perhaps we were meant to step into it.

Years have passed, but her lessons stayed.

Not the dates. Not the exams.

The perspective.

The openness.

The courage to look beyond what is comfortable and explore what is unknown.

Maโ€™am Beltran did not simply teach Social Studies. She shaped the way we see the world. And in doing so, she shaped who we would become.

Today, as we remember her, I feel grateful and I feel the ache of loss. But I also feel something else: the certainty that her voice, her passion, and her gentle insistence that the world is vast and worth understanding will continue to live in all of us who once sat in her classroom.

Thank you, Maโ€™am.

You opened the world to a fifteen-year-old boy who did not yet know how far he would go.

Mark your calendars!!!

February is lining up a rare run of sky events that are easy to miss if you are not paying attention.

If you enjoy moments that make you stop and look up, this is a month worth remembering.

Which one are you most excited to see?

The building stood still, its whitewashed walls and weathered pillars carrying the weight of decades of laughter, secrets, and unfinished dreams. The name across the facade, Isabela National High School, gleamed under the sun, but beneath its letters lay countless untold stories, folded into time like paper notes passed between restless hands.

From the car, the side mirror caught a different truth: the face of a man no longer a boy, staring at the place that once shaped him. The mirror became more than glass, it was memory itself, reflecting a past that tugged with both tenderness and regret. He saw the courtyard where he once sprinted, breathless with youth, and the classrooms where chalk dust rose like fragile clouds, carrying promises of futures bigger than their town.

Yet mirrors are stubborn. They do not let you stay; they remind you of what is behind, even as the road ahead insists on being traveled. The man lingered there, caught between the pull of nostalgia and the hum of the engine beneath him. The school stood like an anchor, the mirror like a ghost. And he was the contradiction: one part looking back, another part driving forward.

In that fleeting moment, he realized the mirrorโ€™s allegory: to move forward is always to carry what you leave behind. The school would remain, but only as reflection, etched forever in the rearview of his life.
