Extension SeRIES | Training-Workshop on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Integrated Crop Management (ICM) was conducted on October 21–22, 2025 in Pintuyan, Southern Leyte to enhance farmers’ knowledge and skills on safe, sustainable, and profitable vegetable production. The activity addressed key challenges in vegetable farming such as improper input use, pest and disease management, and declining soil productivity through discussions on GAP principles, integrated nutrient and pest management, and environmentally sound farming practices.

The training improved participants’ awareness of food safety, soil health, and climate-resilient production strategies, with farmers expressing commitment to adopting recommended practices in their farms. The activity contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by supporting sustainable food production, SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) through safe vegetable production, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by enhancing farm profitability, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting efficient input use, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) through climate-resilient agricultural practices.

Strengthening Local Environmental Governance 🌱 | Research into Policy

The Sangguniang Barangay of Sta. Sofia, Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte formally adopted a Resolution Strengthening Mangrove Conservation and Management Through Enhanced Legal Protections, Active Community Involvement, and Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration.

This policy reflects a clear Research into Policy Approach, as it is anchored on the research project “Mangrove-Sediment-Microorganisms-Carbon dynamics to Enhance Carbon Sequestration Capacity of Mangrove Forests (Project MSMC)” funded by the Department of Science & Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). Local legislation is grounded in scientific evidence and responsive to community and environmental needs.

The resolution advances key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—notably SDG 13 (Climate Action) through climate mitigation and resilience, SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by conserving coastal and marine ecosystems, SDG 15 (Life on Land) through ecosystem protection, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening collaboration among local governments, communities, and academic institutions.

RIESearch | SLSU Faculty Wins Best Presenter at AGRICO 2025 for Climate-Smart Agriculture Research

Engr. Ana Mae W. Aquino-Cuta, M.Sc., a faculty member from Southern Leyte State University (SLSU)-Hinunangan, won Best Presenter in the Climate-Smart Agricultural Practices category at the 12th International Conference on Agriculture (AGRICO 2025) in Bangkok, Thailand, on September 22–23, 2025. Her research, “Geo-Spatial Watershed Assessment for Climate-Smart Agricultural Interventions: A GIS-based Approach in Silago Watershed, Southern Leyte, Philippines,” focused on using GIS tools to promote sustainable agriculture in climate-vulnerable communities.

AGRICO 2025, themed “Innovation Lightens the Future Way for Global Sustainable Food Security,” gathered over 160 participants from 30+ countries to share innovations in sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.

Engr. Aquino-Cuta highlighted the importance of adapting GIS, drones, and sensors to local farming realities to improve food security and ecological resilience. “This recognition will strengthen our watershed research program and help farmers adapt to climate change,” she said.

Her work contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

Travel DiaRIES | SLSU-Hinunangan Joins Prestigious 49th Southeast Asia Seminar on Global Disruptions

Prof. Ian A. Navarrete from the Philippines participated in the 49th Southeast Asia Seminar, held from November 19-24, 2025, in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Kyoto University, this year’s seminar focused on “Global Disruptions and Southeast Asia: Exploring Histories, Narratives, and Transdisciplinary Challenges.”

The seminar aimed to address the complex challenges Southeast Asia faces amid global disruptions by integrating Area Studies (AS) and Transdisciplinary Studies (TD). Area Studies connects local histories, cultures, and societies to global dynamics, while Transdisciplinary Studies promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration to solve multifaceted problems.

Over five days, early-career researchers from diverse fields participated in discussions and lectures on key issues such as climate change, economic instability, and political upheaval. The event encouraged participants to develop research proposals addressing these global disruptions, with a focus on creating practical solutions for Southeast Asia’s sustainable development.

Prof. Navarrete’s involvement underscores the Philippines’ commitment to advancing global dialogues on regional challenges.

His participation contributes to the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration for impactful solutions.

Extension SeRIES | SLSU-Hinunangan Conduct GAP–ICM Training to Advance Sustainable Vegetable Production

Faculty members of the SLSU-HC Agriculture Department, led by the Faculty Dean Dr. John Paul R. Gapasin, conducted a Training-Workshop on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Integrated Crop Management (ICM) on November 18–19, 2025 in Liloan, Southern Leyte.

Hon. Shirlita Y. Chong opened the activity, emphasizing Liloan’s commitment to strengthening local food security through science-based agricultural training. Followed by their messages from Malou Gaviola and Nanneth Aquiatan reinforced the importance of adopting GAP–ICM to improve yields, ensure food safety, and address climate challenges.

Dr. Fe Alin T. Dalangin delivered an overview of the workshop, highlighting key areas such as GAP compliance, integrated pest and nutrient management, and postharvest practices.
Project Leader Dr. Dominador P. Granada underscored SLSU’s role in bridging research and community-based agricultural development.

The two-day activity equipped farmers and agricultural stakeholders with practical, sustainable techniques to enhance vegetable production while protecting environmental integrity.

The initiative supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by promoting safe, sustainable, and climate-resilient vegetable production.
