𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛: 𝗕𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗗! ❌

⚠️ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗜𝗖𝗧: MISLEADING

The belief that sitting too close to a screen damages your eyes has been around for decades. Older television displays could cause visual discomfort because of factors such as low image quality and viewing conditions. However, the claim that safety warnings were added by television manufacturers specifically to avoid lawsuits is a historical claim that would need separate evidence; it should not be presented as fact without a reliable source.

Modern screens generally do not cause permanent eye damage simply because you sit close to them. However, prolonged screen use can cause digital eye strain, which may include dry or irritated eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and eye fatigue. One reason for dryness is that people tend to blink less while concentrating on screens, while prolonged near focusing can also contribute to discomfort (Al-Mohtaseb et al., 2023).

The statement that “your vision won't worsen because of screens” is also too absolute. Research has found an association between greater digital-screen exposure and myopia (nearsightedness), particularly among children and adolescents. A 2025 systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of 45 studies involving more than 335,000 participants found that each additional hour of daily digital-screen exposure was associated with higher odds of myopia (Ha et al., 2025).Another meta-analysis similarly reported an association between greater screen exposure and myopia among children and adolescents (Foreman et al., 2024).

The key distinction is temporary eye strain vs. longer-term vision effects. Dryness, headaches, and tired eyes can result from prolonged screen use and reduced blinking, while the relationship between screen exposure and myopia is a separate issue that researchers are still studying.

So next time you hear “Sitting too close to a screen damages your eyes,” remember:

Question the claim.
Check the evidence.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁

Science stepped beyond the classroom as 100 learners and educators of Himamaylan National High School joined CENRO for a mangrove planting and coastal clean-up in Sitio Malusay, Barangay Caradio-an, Tuesday afternoon.

With mud beneath their feet and the tide drawing closer, participants first planted 100 pagatpat (𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘢) and bungalon (𝘈𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴) seedlings across the intertidal zone. The group then proceeded with the coastal clean-up, collecting scattered waste along the shoreline.

For a few hours, the coast became a classroom beyond four walls, where learners took part in an activity centered on environmental care and conservation.

The activity brought together members of the D’ Matinag Club, Science Club, SPSTE-LG, science teachers, and selected STE learners in celebration of Science Month 2026, carrying this year’s theme, “Flow State: Fostering Focus, Foreseeing Futures,” into community action.

Himamaylan City is among the areas encompassed by the Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands Conservation Area (NOCWCA), which was designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2016. The site covers approximately 89,607.81 hectares and includes 52 coastal barangays across three cities and seven municipalities.

As the afternoon came to a close, the shoreline stood cleaner, while 100 newly planted seedlings remained rooted in the mud—a small act of environmental stewardship carried beyond the classroom and into the community.

INFORM, INNOVATE, IGNITE: D’MATINAG EXECUTIVES OFFICIALLY INDUCTED AT 4TH SOLGA & OATH TAKING '26!

It’s a wrap!

The pursuit of scientific excellence meets dedicated student leadership as D’Matinag, the official organization of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand, took part in the 4th State of the Learners’ Government Address (SOLGA), alongside the COOR-Council and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Oath Taking Ceremony '26 at Himamaylan National High School.

The event commenced with the singing of the National Anthem and an opening prayer, followed by the Panunumpa led by SSLG Protocol Officer Jillian Marie B. Albao.

Himamaylan National High School Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Mr. Sergi Trangco formally welcomed everyone in his Opening Remarks, highlighting the role of integrity and passion in youth leadership. SSLG Vice President John John T. Lepaña then called the assembly to order.

The highlight of the ceremony—the solemn Oath-Taking Proper—was administered by Project Development Officer I, Mr. Aurelio Barrios. Our newly elected D’Matinag officers stood alongside fellow student leaders, pledging their full commitment to serve the STEM community with integrity, innovation, and unwavering passion.

Following the induction, SSLG President Claire T. Campaner delivered the State of the Learners’ Government Address (SOLGA), laying out the vision and goals for the student body.

To our D’Matinag officers, STEM learners, and the entire CoorFam: this is where our research, ideas, and leadership converge. Let’s formulate solutions, break barriers, and lead with heart!
