Continuing its journalism seminar-workshop, KASANAG held a session on publication layout and video editing at the campus conference hall on October 9, 2026, followed by a team-building activity in the afternoon.

Resource speaker Mr. Richard D. Dioteles, Teacher VI, and the School Head of Cantupa Integrated School shared his expertise in layout design and multimedia production, drawing from his experience as a former DepEd TV graphics and video editor and an award-winning campus journalism trainer and coach.

Emphasizing the importance of going back to the principles and elements of design, Dioteles advised the participants, โ€œWhile designs may be subjective, effective design is purposeful,โ€ encouraging the layout artists and aspiring video editors to improve the quality and effectiveness of the publicationโ€™s materials.

The afternoon session featured team-building games, encouraging collaboration and strengthening camaraderie among the staffers.

The event concluded with a sharing of reflections, an awarding ceremony recognizing the outstanding writers from the first day of the workshop, discussions on upcoming campus activities, and a song dedication. | via Eliza Perez

WVSU-Himamaylan City Campus student organizations Himamaylan English and Literature Learners Organization (HELLO) and Kapisanan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Filipino (KAMFIL), in partnership with the Himamaylan City Public Library (HCPL), officially launched the Training of Tutors and Assessors for the โ€œBayan Ko, Titser Koโ€ Literacy Program today, October 9, at the HCPL Co-Working Space.

Launched by Angat Buhay Pilipinas, โ€œBayan Ko, Titser Koโ€ (BKTK) is a national literacy initiative that aims to turn Filipino communities into strong readers by equipping volunteer tutors with the skills and tools to help struggling learners catch up in reading.

The training was designed to prepare volunteers with everything they need to guide young readers. The morning session began with a video recording of Dr. Rothsel Cabatac discussing โ€œUnderstanding Reading and the Struggling Reader,โ€ followed by Dr. Jonalyn Duhaylungsod on literacy interventions and managing small groups.

Ms. Ella Veraguas then walked participants through the BKTK Program Overview, unpacked the program kits, and demonstrated the BKTK lessons.

After a midday break, the afternoon continued with Mr. Roger Linas explaining โ€œUnderstanding the Tuklas Basa Assessment,โ€ and Ms. Veraguas showed and discussed the group about a demo teaching and actual assessment practice.

The session wrapped up with reflection, open discussion, and the awarding of certificates to the newly trained tutors and assessors.

Through this partnership, WVSU-HCC continues to live out its mission of producing high-quality graduates while serving the community to prove that when schools and communities work hand in hand, every child gets a fair chance to learn, grow, and succeed. | via Jessa Bardon

Imagine stepping outside your home only to be met by the stench of sewage, overgrown grass, and piles of uncollected trash. These are the exact problems our barangay officials are tasked to solveโ€”the level of government closest to us, meant to hear our concerns and act on them. Yet many of us find ourselves waiting, watching, and wondering: When will things change?

Instead of giving us the chance to choose new leaders, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act No. 12326, moving the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections from November 2026 to November 2028 and extending the term of all incumbent officials from three years to five. This decision was made without listening to the peopleโ€”affecting every barangay, every community, and every voter in the country.

I strongly disagree with applying this extension to officials who were elected for a three-year term. While longer terms could benefit competent leaders, that standard should not apply to those already in office. The people did not vote for them to serve five years. We deserve the right to decide who earns that extended trust, rather than having it gifted to those elected for a shorter period. Let us vote first. Then, if the people choose to return good leaders, they can serve the full five years. That is how democracy works.

For one, this law traps communities with leaders they desperately want to replace. Proponents argue that five-year terms give officials more time to finish projects. That is reasonable, but only if they are actually doing their jobs. What about barangays where progress has stalledโ€”where streets remain unpaved, garbage stays uncollected, and complaints go unanswered?

Our vote is our voice, and this law silences us for two extra years, forcing communities to endure leaders they would never have reelected.

Furthermore, it blocks new leaders and rewards complacency. Every election brings fresh faces with new energy and ideas. By delaying the vote, we deny aspiring public servants their chance to serve and deny our communities the benefit of change. Worse, when officials know their positions are guaranteed without facing voters, the urgency to deliver results fades. They continue receiving the same compensation, but the motivation to work hard weakens.

Job security without accountability does not produce better service; it produces complacency.

Above all, no official ran for office promising five years. Every candidate campaigned asking for three, and every voter cast their ballot based on that understanding. Changing the rules midterm undermines the fundamental contract between the voter and the elected.

Some may argue that continuity is more important than changeโ€”that extending terms prevents disruption and keeps development moving forward. But there is no greater disruption than a democracy where people cannot exercise their right to choose. Continuity matters only when the people demand it.

If leaders are doing well, they have nothing to fear from an election; voters will return them. If they are not, they should not remain in the office simply because the law changed the date. Stability without choice is not leadership; it is entrenchment.

Longer terms are not inherently wrong. If five years allows leaders to accomplish more, let that be the standardโ€”but starting with the next election. Hold the vote as scheduled in November 2026. Let us vote first. Then, if the new law must take effect, let it apply to those who run knowing they will serve five years, winning because the people believe they are worth that commitment.

Democracy is not just about having leaders. It is about having the power to choose themโ€”and the power to replace them. Do not take that power away. Let us vote first. Let the outcome be decided not by law, but by the people.

West Visayas State University officially onboarded its new DagYoung Student Ambassadors from Calinog Campus, Himamaylan City Campus, and Main Campus during SYNC & VOLT: DSA Onboarding and Orientation 2026 at the Merge Room, Quezon Hall, on October 2.

Dr. Ma. Pilar Malata, Dean of the Office of Student Affairs, opened the event. She was followed by DSA Chairperson Ms. Amabela Fiona Le Benid, who explained that being an ambassador means serving as WVSUโ€™s face and voice, carrying its values to a wider audience. DSA Vice Chairperson Mr. Ritz Christian Gallardo then led the review of the organizationโ€™s Constitution and Bylaws, covering duties, rights, expectations, and commitments.

The afternoon shifted to team-building and camaraderie. Mr. Kim Joshua Olaco kicked off the session with an energizer, while Mr. Ritz Christian Gallardo facilitated activities that tested teamwork and creativity. Despite unforeseen rain, the group stayed fully engaged โ€” proving that commitment matters more than perfect conditions.

To wrap up the program, Prof. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, ILLO Director, delivered a virtual message emphasizing service, shared values, and building meaningful relationships. Ms. Akilah Keyah Bartolome, P.O. and Event Chairperson, gave the closing remarks, affirming the dayโ€™s bonds and the groupโ€™s core mission: to lead, empower, and make an impact. | via Kimberly Dela Cruz
