As we deepened our understanding of su***de awareness and prevention, we were encouraged to look beyond what is immediately seenโto become more attentive to the struggles that may remain unspoken and the burdens that are often carried quietly. Through the thoughtful insights of our resource speaker, Rev. Fr. Eugene D. Lucerna II, PhD, RPsy, RGC, we were reminded that prevention begins with awareness, but grows through empathy: the willingness to notice, to listen without judgment, and to reach out with genuine concern.
Together with our Peer Mentors and Guidance-In-Charge, we reflected on the significance of simply being present for one another. There are moments when people do not need answers as much as they need someone willing to listen. A sincere question, a patient conversation, or a reassuring presence may seem small, yet these gestures can create a sense of belonging for someone who may be struggling in ways we cannot see. In learning to listen more deeply, we also learn to care more meaningfully.
May we carry these lessons beyond this gathering and into the quiet moments when kindness matters most. May we learn to notice the person who grows unusually silent, to listen to the words beneath their words, and to offer warmth without waiting to be asked. After all, it doesnโt take a penny to be kind to someoneโsometimes, a little patience, a gentle word, or simply staying long enough to listen can mean more than we will ever know. In a world where so much can go unnoticed, may we choose to be the reason someone feels seen, heard, and remembered.โค๏ธโ๐ฉน
