Grit, intellect, and unwavering determinationโthese were the weapons that Blanche Bella A. Naranjo of Gutalac National High School (GNHS) wielded as she clinched 3rd place in the Population Development (PopDev) Quiz Bee during the Division Festival of Talents held from March 17-19, 2025, in Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte.
The competition was nothing short of intense, with contestants from six clusters battling it out in a test of knowledge and quick thinking. The tension escalated when four competitors, including Naranjo, achieved perfect scores in all rounds, forcing an unexpected and highly competitive clincher showdown.
At first, Naranjoโs precise response to the initial clincher question set her apart, putting her on the brink of victory. However, a dispute from opposing coaches led to a decision for an extended clincher round, stretching to a staggering 12 tiebreaker questionsโa testament to the caliber of the competitors. One after another, the contestants answered flawlessly, refusing to be eliminated. It was only on the 12th clincher question that the final rankings were determined, with Naranjo securing the 3rd spot in what became an unforgettable intellectual showdown.
Despite the limited review time before the competition, her coach, Maโam Ailyn Jane I. Marchan, expressed immense pride in Naranjoโs performance. โShe gave it her all. The competition was incredibly tough, but she stood her ground and never wavered,โ Marchan shared.
Though the gold narrowly slipped away, Naranjoโs performance proved her resilience, brilliance, and competitive spirit. She may have finished third, but in the eyes of her school and mentors, she remains a true champion of knowledge.
