Sa loob ng 12 araw, nabalot ang bansang Hungary ng rebolusyon na sinimulan ng mga mamamayan nito laban sa kanilang mapang-aping komunistang rehimen. Sumiklab sa araw na ito noong 1956 ang rebolusyon sa Hungary nang magtipun-tipon ang tinatayang 20,000 demonstrador na pawang mga estudyante, upang hingin sa pamahalaang komunista ng Hungary ang mas malaya at demokratikong pamahalaan, at mga pagbabagong sibil at pang-ekonomiko. Lumahok na rin sa mapayapang aklasan ang mga Hungarian mula sa iba't ibang sektor upang suportahan ang hinaing ng mga estudyante.

Nang kinondena ng partido komunista ng Hungary ang nangyayaring demonstrasyon, sama-sama nilang ibinagsak ang bronseng istatwa ni Joseph Stalin sa kabisera ng Hungary na Budapest, at tinanggal nila ang komunistang simbolo sa bandila ng Hungary. Sinubukan rin ng mga demonstrador na okupahin ang isang istasyon ng radyo para doon iere ang kanilang mga hinaing, pero marahas ang naging tugon ng otoridad sa aksyong ito, na ikinamatay ng ilang mga demonstrador. Tumaas na ang tensyon sa Hungary nang tinawag na ng pamahalaang Hungarian ang atensyon ng Soviet Union para humingi ng suporta laban sa mga demonstrador, at sa sumunod na araw, inokupa ng hukbong Soviet ang Budapest.

Sa pag-asang mapapahupa ng pamahalaang Hungarian ang sitwasyon, ibinalik nila bilang Premier ng Hungary si Imre Nagy, na dating natanggal dahil sa pagbatikos niya noon kay Stalin. Muling ibinalik ang kaayusan sa Budapest sa apela na rin ni Nagy, pero itinulak naman niya ang pagbuwag sa one-party system sa pamahalaang Hungarian. Idinagdag rin niya ang pag-anunsiyo niya ng pagkalas sa Warsaw Pact.

Lalo lang tumaas ang tensyon sa Budapest sa aksyong iyon ni Nagy, kaya noong ika-4 ng Nobyembre, sumalakay ulit ang hukbong Soviet sa Budapest para tuluyan nang sugpuin ang pag-aalsa sa Hungary. Nagkapalitan ng putok ang mga rebeldeng Hungarian at mga sundalong Soviet sa mga kalye ng Budapest, kung saan sa isang kaso, nagawang nakawin ng mga rebeldeng Hungarian ang mga tangkeng Soviet para gamitin laban sa kanila. Inanunsyo ni Imre Nagy na nasa harap ng pagsalakay ang Hungary, at saka siya lumikas sa embahada ng Yugoslavia sa Budapest. Inaresto kalaunan si Nagy at hinatulan ng kamatayan makalipas ang dalawang taon.

Ikinagulat ng international community ang naging tugon ng pamahalaang Soviet sa sumiklab na pag-aalsa sa Hungary laban sa pamahalaang komunista, at nabatikos rito ang noo'y Premier ng Soviet Union na si Nikita Khrushchev dahil kabaligtaran sa kanyang naging aksyon ang ginawa niyang pagkondena sa mapang-aping rehimeng Stalin. Wala namang ginawa ang pamahalaan ng Estados Unidos sa nangyaring rebolusyon sa Hungary bukod lang sa pagkondena at pagsimpatya sa mga nabiktima ng represyon ng mga Soviet sa pag-aalsa sa Hungary. Mahigit 30,000 Hungarian ang lumikas papuntang Amerika bilang tugon ng nangyayaring represyon ng pamahalaang komunista ng Hungary, habang mahigit 200,000 Hungarian ang lumikas sa iba't ibang bahagi ng mundo. Aabot sa 2,500 Hungarian ang napatay sa 12 araw na pag-aalsa sa Hungary laban sa komunismo, ang kauna-unahang radikal na aksyon laban sa rehimeng komunista sa Europa.
