Pechay in Thriving in the Garden🥬

Our LASWA garden continues to nurture pechay (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis), a resilient leafy vegetable from the Brassicaceae family. With its broad green leaves and tender stalks, pechay thrives in fertile soil and remains a staple in Filipino cuisine.

Scientifically, pechay is valued for being low in calories yet rich in Vitamin C, calcium, iron, and potassium. These nutrients strengthen bones, boost immunity, aid blood health, and regulate the heart—making pechay a vital source of wellness for learners and families.

As we patiently wait a few more days for harvest, each growing leaf reminds us of the lessons in sustainability and nutrition. From garden to table, pechay stands as proof that simple greens can bring powerful health benefits while teaching our learners the value of nature’s gifts.

LASWA TA Produce: Community Support in Action

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Rovelyn Gersabalino and Mrs. Hannah Mae Gayanilo for supporting LASWA TA harvests. Their commitment affirms the value of school gardening as eggplants, okra, and kangkong find their place in a healthy vegetable diet.

The proceeds collected from these harvests are dedicated to sustaining the needs of our school garden—ensuring seeds, tools, and care for continued growth.

Their support reflects the shared responsibility of school and community in sustaining nourishment and growth. Each harvest is not only food but a symbol of partnership and gratitude.

As part of our LASWA TA Gardening Program, proper plot preparation is essential before planting radish (labanos).

âś… Well-tilled soil ensures straight and healthy roots.
âś… Weed-free beds reduce competition for nutrients.
âś… Balanced compost supports root development.
âś… Good drainage prevents waterlogging and rotting.
âś… Proper spacing allows each plant to thrive.

After class, Grade 6 learners proceed to the school garden to prepare the plots as part of their hands-on agricultural activity.

Careful preparation guarantees a productive harvest and strengthens our learners’ practice of sustainable gardening.

In growing plants, watering is essential for their healthy development and fruit-bearing. Learners are assigned to water their plants regularly as part of the school’s gardening activity.

Water is important because it enables photosynthesis, nutrient transport, firmness of plant tissues, and cooling through transpiration.

And of course, they are delighted when it rains, as nature itself helps nurture their plants.

First Harvest, First Blessings

Our school garden has yielded its first harvest — freshly picked vegetables lovingly nurtured by our learners. Parents gladly purchased the produce, turning this simple act into an additional source of income for the school.

This milestone is more than just a harvest; it is a testament to the value of hard work, sustainability, and community partnership. Each seed planted has grown into both nourishment and opportunity, reminding us that when we cultivate together, we thrive together.
