In most schools, detention is a place where time feels like a slow-moving shadow on the wall. But for the young filmmakers of Grade 12 STEM Apolaki, detention became something else entirely—a doorway to imagination, creativity and cinematic triumph.

Their short film Detensiyon did more than tell a story. It captured hearts, stirred laughter, sparked mystery and ultimately reigned as the Best Short Film of the Gonzalikhusay Sine Fest 2026, a prestigious competition among Senior High School students of Gonzaga National High School.

The film’s success shone like a constellation of awards. Joeileri Saribay steered the story with a director’s steady vision, earning Best Director, while Chase Jeremy Antonio painted every scene with light and shadow to win Best Cinematographer. The film also secured Best Original Story and Best Short Film Poster, making Detensiyon one of the most decorated entries among the eleven competing short films.

At the heart of the story are five unlikely companions—students bound together not by friendship but by punishment. Summoned to a detention room by their teacher, Lance Limhuel Cartagena, they represent different shades of youthful flaws: an athlete bully portrayed by Hanz Lee Respicio, a carefree and tactless student played by Faith Nicolas, a smart yet careless environmental offender breathed to life by Haily Lopez and a rich yet mischievous guy played by Gion Hugo Ramos. Each carries a storm of attitude into the quiet room.

Yet inside that room sits someone different.

Rhea Guerrero’s character, a lonely student who finds comfort in detention because she has no friends, becomes the silent gravity that slowly pulls the group together. What begins as a room filled with tension soon unfolds into unexpected moments of humor and curiosity.

Their boredom leads them to a mysterious Ouija board session. As their fingers hover over the board, suspense tiptoes into the room. A cryptic note appears on the table: “Bigyan Niyo ako ng Hustisya!.” For a moment, imagination runs wild—ghosts, secrets and unanswered cries echo through their minds.

But the mystery unravels with a playful twist. The message, it turns out, is not from the supernatural but simply a romantic quote left behind—someone’s quiet confession of love.

As the evening deepens, reality returns when the school guard, Xylo Xyx Xyron Serrano, discovers the students still inside the detention room and sends them home, ending their strange little adventure.

Yet the magic of Detensiyon lies not only in its plot. The film weaves drama, comedy and mystery like threads in a colorful tapestry, creating a story that is both entertaining and reflective. Its originality, paired with striking cinematography, made it shine brighter than the rest.

Guiding the young creators behind the scenes was their mentor, Sir Lesterwin Udarbe, whose dedication to media arts continues to nurture creativity among students of Gonzaga National High School.

In the end, what began as a fictional detention turned into a celebration of talent. The room meant for discipline became a stage for storytelling, and the students of STEM Apolaki proved that sometimes the most unforgettable stories begin in the most unexpected places.

Thus began the First Dance of Gala Night 2026 at Gonzaga National High School, a moment woven into the very tradition of A Night of Magic.

For in this enchanted celebration, it has always been a cherished custom: the parents lead the first dance.

As the melody flowed like a silver river, mothers and fathers stepped onto the polished floor with their children—no longer just learners in elegant gowns and tailored suits but sons and daughters wrapped in gratitude. Heels clicked like whispered thank-yous. Polished shoes glided like promises fulfilled. In every gentle turn and careful sway, there was a story.

A story of sleepless nights turned into achievements.
Of silent sacrifices stitched into uniforms.
Of coins saved, advice given, prayers murmured in the quiet hours before dawn.

Set inside a house that feels more like a memory than a home, Tahan Na unfolds the fragile world of three siblings torn apart not by conflict but by life itself. At its center stands Anna—the youngest—portrayed with breathtaking depth by Janelle Yadao. Like the last light left on after everyone has gone to bed, Anna remains in the house where laughter once lived freely.

Three years ago, the pillars of their family—their parents—passed away. Since then, the home has become a museum of yesterday. Her brother (McDwayne Ferrer) works in a faraway place, chasing dreams and responsibilities. Her sister (Corina Abliter) has stepped into marriage, building a life of her own. And so Anna is left behind—not abandoned but alone.

The film moves gently like pages of an old album being turned. Birthdays, once sweet with tradition, now taste bittersweet. In their family, each celebrant received a slice of cake from every member—a simple act that symbolized togetherness. But now, the plates are set for one. The knife still cuts, but fewer hands reach out. The frosting melts under the weight of absence.

It is no surprise, then, that Janelle Yadao emerged victorious as Best Actress at the Gonzalikhusay Sine Fest 2026, a prestigious short film competition among the Senior High School students of Gonzaga National High School. Through the Gonzalikhusay Sine Fest 2026, learners stepped into the spotlight—not only as actors and actresses—but also as directors, scriptwriters, cinematographers, editors and technical visionaries.

Among the films that stirred emotions and commanded applause was Alpas sa Gapos ng Kahapon, directed by Mikaella Hanne Carino and proudly produced by Pure Academic 11 Luna. Garnering the title of Third Best Short Film, the masterpiece stood as a quiet storm—gentle in its beginning yet thunderous in its message.

The film tells the poignant story of two sisters, portrayed with remarkable sincerity by Krizadel Modelo and Marielle Polka. Abandoned by their father and left to navigate a world suddenly stripped of certainty, the sisters seek refuge in the home of their aunt. But instead of warmth, they are met with cold indifference and harsh treatment. The house that should have been a sanctuary became a cage.

And in that cage stood a fierce presence—brought to life by Darlene Borillo, whose portrayal of the strict and unkind aunt was nothing short of electrifying. GALAXIES OF INGENUITY: STEM REIGNS SUPREME IN THE SHS BOOTH EXPOSITION 2026

Beneath the bright skies of February 20–21, the grounds in front of the Senior High School Department of Gonzaga National High School transformed into a vibrant constellation of ideas, colors and creativity. As part of the SHS Day celebration integrated into the 31st Founding Anniversary of Gonzaga National High School, the Booth Exposition Competition became a living showcase of brilliance—where strands and tracks turned vision into vibrant reality.

This annual exposition was more than a display; it was a celebration of identity and intellect. Grade 12 strands—ABM, HUMSS, STEM and TVL HE—unveiled the fruits of their academic journeys, while Grade 11 groups ignited curiosity through collaboration: Luna and Cassiopeia as one Pure Academic force, Cosmos and Orion as another and the combined Pure TechPro and Academic with Doorway group merging innovation with technical prowess.

In a remarkable step toward fairness and equal footing, all competing groups began assembling their booths on February 19—an innovation that ensured preparation met parity and creativity thrived in equal measure.

From the first hammer strike to the final decorative touch, the air buzzed with anticipation.

The competition sought excellence in many forms: Best Booth, Most Informative, Most Innovative, Most Resourceful, Most Organized, Best Concept and Best Strand Icon. Each booth stood like a proud pavilion of purpose—walls adorned with research outputs, interactive models gleaming under the sun and strand icons rising like emblems of pride.

The judging panel—Sir Arsenio Almazan of Rebecca NHS, Sir Lance Mangrubang and Sir Achernar Aguila of Cabiraoan NHS—carefully evaluated the booths on the morning of February 20. With discerning eyes and thoughtful deliberation, they measured not only design but depth, not only beauty but brilliance.

When the results were unveiled, STEM blazed like a supernova.

WHEN RIVERS RISE AND RHYTHMS REIGN: THE TRIUMPHANT SURGE OF STEM 12 MANDARAGAN IN THE CONTEMPORARY DANCE CONTEST

Victory flowed like a living river as STEM 12 Mandaragan emerged champion in the Contemporary Dance Competition Field Demonstration of the 31st Founding Anniversary of Gonzaga NHS.

With their breathtaking piece, Himig ng Tubig, the class transformed the stage into an ocean of meaning—depicting the vital role of water in society. Every ripple of their hands, every wave of their bodies, and every powerful leap echoed the rhythm of life sustained by water. From the gentleness of flowing streams to the roaring strength of crashing tides, their performance was both poetry and protest—an artistic reminder that water is life and life must be protected.

Led by national champions of the Bayle sa Kalye—Kurth Prince Sumajit, Iah Antonio, Kurt Justin Guliman, Levronne James Espejo, Kleenthe David Sumajit, and Al Jarrette Torres—the class executed a seamless transition of ballet grace into the sharp intensity of jazz and the daring strength of gymnastics. Their choreography unfolded like a current—smooth yet unstoppable. The judges were left in awe as the group delivered synchronized precision and powerful contemporary statements that spoke louder than words.
