ParSU Center for Food Safety Research and Extension

According to the World Population Review, the Philippines has a total population of 𝟏𝟏𝟕.𝟕 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧, with 𝟒𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 people lacking access to a reliable water supply. Many of these water sources are increasingly compromised by climate change and pollution. To address this, DENR Undersecretary 𝐉𝐮𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐮𝐧𝐚 has overseen a ₱485-million investment in water regulation, including the installation of desalination and filtration systems designed to mitigate the country’s ongoing water crisis.

In line with these efforts, the 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 – 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 (CFSRE) was invited by the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Goa, Camarines Sur, to monitor and investigate the water quality of the 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒖𝒔𝒐 𝑹𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓, a primary water source for the municipality. The mission was conducted in coordination with the 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒚 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒊𝒘𝒂𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒚, 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒓. 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒋𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆 𝑨𝒕𝒐𝒍𝒆 from the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences, and various officials from LGU Goa, the Partido Water Supply System (PWSS), and the DENR - CENRO Goa. The LGU expressed urgent concern over the current situation, specifically the encroachment of human activity upon the 𝟐𝟓-𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 protected radius from the water source.

A team of researchers from the CFSRE performed a comprehensive assessment of the river water. Utilizing specialized equipment, they analyzed the water’s 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 and 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 to determine its compliance with DENR standards and investigate potential pathogenic organisms that might be present in the water.

Spearheaded by the Center Director, 𝐌𝐬. 𝐋𝐢𝐞𝐳𝐞𝐥 𝐃𝐂. 𝐀𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐞-𝐍𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐚, the initiative aims to create sustainable livelihoods for citizens. By integrating a rigorous scientific approach, the partnership ensures that all local production consistently meets international food safety standards.

Aiming to bridge the gap between research and real-world application, Partido State University (ParSU) Center for Food Safety Research and Extension (CFSRE) partnered with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Special Area for Agricultural Development (BFAR-SAAD) Program for a strategic collaboration meeting on March 18, 2026 at the ParSU Boardroom, ensuring that food safety standards and fishery innovations work hand-in-hand for the benefit of communities.
