NEWS | FUTURE MIDWIVES OF FSSTI TAKE THE NEXT STEP

First-year midwifery students from the Fatima School of Science and Technology created a lasting memory celebrating the start of their careers as professional health workers, the 3rd Pinning, Candlelighting, and Donning of Apron event which took place at Churinga Eco Resort - San Antonio, Tigaon, Camarines Sur on June 5th, 2025 at 12 NN under the theme “Midwifery: Stepping Forward with Skill, Compassion & Purpose. Highlighting Competence & Empathy.”

The ceremony commenced with the introduction led by Ms. Cyril C. Domingue, RN, RM, Assistant Registrar/RLE Coordinator, to welcome all attendees to the event. Following Ms. Domingue’s welcome, the School Dean, Mrs. Bienvenida B. Oliva, RN, RM, MAN, PhD, presented 58 female candidates and 4 male candidates for the 3rd Pinning, Candlelighting, and Donning of Apron, announcing that they were ready to begin the next phase of their education and training in Midwifery.

The ceremony included the Donning of the Apron and the Pinning Ceremony. The Donning of Apron was conducted by Ms. Cyril D. Dominguez, RM, and Mr. Jovelle B. Sto. Domingo, RM, BSM. The pinning ceremony was then led by Mrs. Bienvenida B. Oliva, RN, RM, MAN, Ph.D., and Ms. Karen Ann G. Garchitorena, LPT, the School President and Administrator. With the support of their proud parents, friends and family, the students received their midwifery pins.

The event included a meaningful message from the invited guest speaker, Mr. Michael John P. Prades, RN, Hospital Administrator of Tinambac Municipal Hospital, Tinambac, Camarines Sur. Although Mr. Pradesh was unable to attend due to an urgent responsibility, he entrusted his message to Ms. Kristen A. Caballero, RN, Head Nurse of Tinambac Municipal Hospital, who delivered his remarks on his behalf. In his message, he emphasized that the Pins, Aprons, and Candles was not just a mere materials, it is a sign of service, hope, and integrity.

The ceremony’s final symbolic acts were carried out solely by the students. Each candidate received a candle to light, a gesture signifying hope, dedication, and the light they will bring to the lives of mothers and families. The students also offered flowers to the Virgin Mary, a tribute reflecting faith, gratitude, and the solemn nature of their chosen vocation.

The ceremony marked a meaningful milestone rather than an endpoint, students will now continue into more intensive clinical exposure and hands-on training, guided by experienced faculty and supported by their families and communities.

NEWS | FSSTI Successfully Conducted a 2-Day First Aid and Basic Life Support Training for Incoming 2nd-Year Fatimanians

In collaboration with the MDRRMO Goa, Fatima School of Science and Technology Inc. conducted a 2-day First Aid and Basic Life Support Training for incoming 2nd-year students of Fatima, instructed by Sir Joseph Jeffrey C. Mercado, RN, EMT, CSSPCLS-TCCC, on May 25–26, and May 28-29, 2026, at the FSSTI Campus.

The program began with a lecture on the first day, covering Basic Life Support for situations such as strokes, heart attacks, and fainting, along with guidance on when to start CPR, the correct CPR sequence, and how to respond to choking. Following the demonstration of the correct hand and body positions by the instructor, the incoming second-year students of Fatima took an oral examination and performed the procedures themselves.

On the second day, the training focused on First Aid procedures for wounds, burns, fractures, and heavy bleeding. Following a lecture and demonstration on proper bandaging techniques, the students completed a practical oral examination on bandaging victims and a final written examination covering all the lessons from the training. The two batches of training were conducted by Sir Joseph Jeffrey C. Mercado, RN, EMT, CSSPCLS-TCCC.

Through this program, students did not just learn First Aid for themselves; they also prepared themselves to help their communities during emergencies by applying these essential life-saving skills.
