When do we use c or k for /k/ sounds at the beginning of some words? The simple rule is to use k if the sound after the initial /k/ sound is the sound of e, i or y. For other sounds after the initial /k/ sound, we use c. Of course there will be exceptions to learn as well.

Explode the Code activity sheets have been really helpful to our students. This is one activity for reading words with magic e in context. Some statements in the activity are so silly that our kids often ask existential questions when they read it. 😅

One common difficulty of children with learning challenges is discriminating the letters b and d. We use teach some strategies for them to independently recognize b and d, particularly the "bed" thumbs up. And to reinforce that skill, we occasionally do some related activities like this b and d sorting activity in Seesaw .

Here's an oral reading activity that we do in Seesaw using the Reading Fluency Assessment tool. It's a really cool and useful automated reading inventory feature because it automatically identifies reading errors, and calculates words per minute (WPM)! Plus, our kids like to hear themselves reading!
