𝑴𝑺𝑼-𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝑬 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝑪𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒉 2𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝑺𝑴𝑬 𝑸𝒖𝒊𝒛 𝑩𝒆𝒆

October 18, 2025 — Four Mechanical Engineering students from Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU-GenSan) brought honor to the university after securing 2nd Place in the 15th Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) Students’ National Conference Quiz Bee, held at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City, Manila.

The team — Mohammad Yunous S. Hassan, Nash O. Longakit, John Paul D. Borja, and John Matthew B. Porras, 3rd and 4th year ME students — represented MSU-GenSan and demonstrated their competence and teamwork as they competed against participants from over 48 universities nationwide.

Serving as their coaches were Engr. Karl Sternberg C. Zaldariaga and Engr. Sandjib L. Caguimbaga, faculty members of the ME Department, who provided guidance and support throughout the preparation and competition.

The University of San Carlos and the University of Batangas won 1st and 3rd places, respectively.

This achievement highlights the university’s commitment to academic excellence and the growing distinction of MSU-Gensan’s Mechanical Engineering program on the national stage.

October 14, 2025 – Mindanao State University–General Santos, through the Human Resource Management Office, honored three Mechanical Engineering faculty members along with other outstanding faculty and staff during the PRAISE Awards 2025 held at the College of Medicine Auditorium.

Engr. Abdul Gafur S. Kudarat received a Plaque of Service Excellence for his 20 years of dedicated service to the university.

Dr. Danilo P. Dadula was also awarded a Plaque of Service Excellence in recognition of his 30 years of service.

Engr. Irene Lara M. Abad-Caladcad received a Certificate of Recognition for her publication in a Scopus-indexed journal, highlighting her contribution to the university’s research endeavors.

The PRAISE Awards, a program of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), aim to recognize and reward government employees for their exemplary contributions to efficiency, productivity, and public service.

𝐌𝐄 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩

Engr. Ronald A. Delalamon and Engr. Harold P. Bergante, faculty members of the Mechanical Engineering Department, participated in a specialized training-workshop on patent search and drafting.

The program was held in two parts: an online session via Zoom on July 8–9, 2025, followed by a face-to-face training at De La Salle University–Laguna Campus on July 21–25, 2025.

The training introduced participants to the Philippine patent system, inventive steps, and inventive spotting, reinforced through case studies and interactive workshops.

Participants also learned systematic techniques in patent search to evaluate novelty and identify existing prior art before drafting applications.

They further developed practical skills in drafting patent claims and specifications, with continuous guidance from mentors to refine their outputs.

The program concluded with sessions on patent prosecution, final presentations, and a closing ceremony that recognized the participants’ progress and successful completion.

𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗢 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗢𝗡: 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 (𝗝𝗣𝗦𝗠𝗘) – 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗠𝗦𝗨-𝗚𝗦𝗖) emerged as 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 in the Quiz Bee of the 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗠𝗥𝗦𝗖).

Ten schools from across Mindanao competed, each team composed of three active quizzers and one or two reserves. The event covered three categories: Mathematics, Engineering, Sciences, and Laws (MESL), Power and Industrial Plant Engineering (PIPE), and Machine Design and Shop Practices (MDSP).

𝗠𝗦𝗨-𝗚𝗦𝗖 and 𝗔𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗼 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗔𝗗𝗗𝗨) ended the regular rounds tied, leading to a 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱. Both teams fought fiercely, but 𝗠𝗦𝗨-𝗚𝗦𝗖 eventually secured the crucial points needed to claim victory, despite a brief concern raised over their use of the Maleev’s empirical formula.

The deciding question involved calculating the air-fuel ratio of a fuel oil for a steam generator with a given percent excess air. Guided by their adviser, 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗿. 𝗖𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗴𝗮—well-known in the university for being an intensive mentor on fuels—the 𝗠𝗦𝗨-𝗚𝗦𝗖 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 applied the formula to arrive at the correct answer, sealing their 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝗻.

With this victory, 𝗠𝗦𝗨-𝗚𝗦𝗖 also earned 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 for the Quiz Bee of the 𝟳𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗣𝗦𝗠𝗘 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, happening on 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟱–𝟭𝟴, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 at the 𝗦𝗠𝗫 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆, where they will compete against top teams from across the country.
