The mother chats with a friend about cooking, the father discusses business but secretly switches to a conversation with his mistress, the son talks with a friend, and the daughter gossips online. Despite being seated together, no one truly communicates or makes eye contact.

The story ends when the mother asks her son to “please pass the salt.” The request hangs in the air, unanswered — leaving readers uncertain whether the salt was ever passed. This unresolved moment symbolizes the family’s broken communication and emotional gap, highlighting how technology and distractions have replaced real human connection.

Upon their return, the husband spots the mouse, leading to their shock and a comical chase to capture it. After several attempts and near misses, the chase ends when the protagonist accidentally steps backward onto the mouse, crushing it. The story concludes with a reflection on the fleeting nature of such encounters and how memories of it fade over time.
