To foster cross-cultural dialogue and support international fieldwork, Mindanao State University – General Santos hosted a delegation of students and faculty from Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, Japan on September 2, 2026.

The visit was conducted under Hitotsubashi University’s Global Leadership Program (GLP) 2026, led by Filipino scholar Maria Cynthia Barriga, alongside teaching assistant Reina Cristine Kudo.

Facilitated by MSU-GenSan’s History and International Relations Department, the eight visiting students and their supervisors engaged in peer dialogues and explored local historical sites, including World War II Japanese bunkers in Barangay Buayan and on the MSU campus.

BA History Alumna goes to 𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔📣

The Mindanao State University- General Santos City BA History proudly congratulates its recent alumna and College Salutatorian, Ms. Nixe Camandan for being the lone representative of MSU-Gensan in the recently concluded 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 (𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔) program in Indonesia from July 19-30, 2026.

As one of the delegates of the said program, She had an educational journey spanning from Jakarta, Bandung, Ciamis, and Yogyakarta learning the best of Islamic culture and scholarship. And by extension, the program also provided an on-hand experience on Buddhist and Sundanese culture.

The delegate had the opportunity to explore landmarks such as the Istiqlal Mosque, Al-Jabbar Grand Mosque, Borobudur Temple and the National Museum.

The MSU-GSC History Department extends its sincerest gratitude to the Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program (SEASREP) Foundation and National Historical Commission of the Philippines for the opportunity on enriching young history scholars on Islamic Culture and Southeast Asian studies.

A special message of gratitude goes to Dr. Maria Serena Diokno of the SEASREP foundation, NHCP Commissioner Cecilia
B.Tangian, and Indonesia Coordinator, Dr. Abdul Wahid and his splendid team for manifesting such opportunity to reality.

Special shout-out to the partner institutions—Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah, Pesantren Darussalam Ciamis, and the UIN Sunan Gunung Djati— in Indonesia for hosting this Travelling Classroom program.

More than the alumna pride attached, the said experience is a manifestation of the growing competency and progress of our humble department.

A delegation of faculty members and graduate students from West Visayas State University (WVSU), Iloilo City, visited Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU-Gensan) from April 12 to 15. Led by Dr. Elias Olapane and Dr. John Erwin Pedroso, the group—composed of MAEd Social Studies students—engaged in a three-day academic and cultural exposure.

On April 12, a research sharing activity between WVSU and MSU-Gensan was conducted at the College of Medicine Auditorium, MSU-CETD. The session provided a platform for academic exchange and presentation of research initiatives from both institutions.

Hosted by MSU-Gensan through the College of Education and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the campus visit formally began on April 13 with a courtesy call to Chancellor Shidik T. Abantas and a tour of the university’s Cultural Museum.

The highlight of the visit came in the afternoon of April 13 during their engagement with the Local Government Unit of General Santos City. The delegates were warmly received by Mayor Lorelie G. Pacquiao, together with City Administrator Shandee Llido and Executive Assistant Lou Bernardino.

More than a formal visit, the LGU engagement served as a “living classroom.” Through presentations from the City Tourism Office (under CEMCDO), led by Eliodoro Alcaya Jr., and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), represented by Allan D. Marcilla, MPA, the delegates gained practical insights into tourism development, environmental management, and responsive local governance. The experience connected classroom theories in Social Studies to actual governance practices on the ground.

The delegation also visited Museo Heneral at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University to learn about General Paulino Santos. The day concluded with a dinner at Mt. Sabrina Panoramic View Resort hosted by Mayor Pacquiao in celebration of her birthday on April 14.

On April 14, the group proceeded to South Cotabato for a cultural immersion, visiting the Fu Yabing Weaving Center in Polomolok and key sites in Lake Sebu, including the Seven Waterfalls and the Langdulay T’nalak Weaving Center, where they encountered the legacy of GAMABA awardees Fu Yabing Masalon Dulo and Lang Dulay.

The visit concluded on April 15, marking academic exchange, cultural appreciation, and meaningful engagement with local governance. This visit is a great opportunity for the two institutions to exchange valuable knowledge and ideas in better serving their respective communities, especially in the aspect of education.

The Department of History extends its sincere gratitude to West Visayas State University, Mindanao State University–General Santos, and the Local Government Unit of General Santos City, through Mayor Lorelie G. Pacquiao, for their support in making this academic engagement possible.

Historical narratives are often shaped by the voices that survive in archives—but what happens when those voices are not our own?

The letters of the Maguindanao Sultanate offer a powerful counterpoint to colonial records, revealing a vibrant tradition of diplomacy, governance, and intellectual exchange rooted in indigenous political thought. This webinar, Epistolary Sovereignty: Political Thought and Diplomacy in the Letters of the Maguindanao Sultanate, seeks to bring these overlooked sources to light and reframe our understanding of Mindanao’s past.

Far from being peripheral actors, the rulers of Maguindanao maintained complex diplomatic relations across Southeast Asia and beyond—engaging with colonial powers, regional sultanates, and global trading networks. Written in Arabic script, Malay, and other regional languages, these correspondences illuminate concepts of sovereignty, alliance-building, law, and resistance from within an Islamic Southeast Asian polity.

Anchored on the theme “Preserving and Reclaiming the Documentary Heritage of Muslim Mindanao,” this initiative highlights the importance of centering indigenous archives in historical inquiry. It calls on scholars, students, and heritage advocates to rethink dominant narratives and participate in reconstructing a more inclusive and accurate account of Philippine history—one that acknowledges Mindanao’s active role in shaping regional and global developments.

This webinar will feature Isaac Donoso, a distinguished historian whose work bridges Islamic, Hispanic, and Southeast Asian archival traditions. Drawing from materials in Spain and across the region, he will explore how the Sultanate’s letters reveal a sophisticated diplomatic culture and literate political tradition often overlooked in mainstream historiography.

Organized by the Mindanao State University – General Santos College of Social Sciences and Humanities and its Department of History, this event serves as a platform for historical recovery, critical discourse, and heritage preservation—contributing to ongoing efforts to decolonize Philippine historiography and strengthen Bangsamoro identity through documentary evidence.

Memorias en Acción, which translates to Memories in Action, underscores the dynamic nature of memory as an active and interpretive process. It is a half-day documentary seminar centered on public history practice.

This activity explores how histories are constructed, represented, and communicated through documentary filmmaking.
Through the integration of historical research, ethical community documentation, and applied technical training, the seminar aims to foster deeper reflection, strengthen public engagement, and highlight the role of documentary media in making history accessible and relevant.
