Congratulations to Prof. Kenneth C. Lisbo, Prof. Novie Arren P. Barreto, and Prof. Renz Anthony R. Sumapal, faculty members of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, on their achievement as co-authors of a book chapter published in Ius Gentium.
The chapter titled โFrom Advocates to Targets: Chilling Effects of Red-Tagging on Peace Advocates in Mindanao, Philippinesโ examines the state-sponsored practice of red-tagging, which brands peace advocates, human rights defenders, and civil society organizations as terrorists or communist sympathizers. Drawing on in-depth interviews with indigenous rights defenders, community organizers, and legal practitioners, the study reveals the profound personal and professional toll of red-tagging, including psychological trauma, career disruptions, social ostracization, and physical threats. It also highlights the paradoxical visibility created by repression, where international solidarity often emerges in response, inadvertently strengthening the causes it seeks to silence. By framing red-tagging as epistemic and structural violence, the chapter underscores its broader implications for democratic governance, civil society spaces, and peacebuilding in Mindanao, while calling for urgent legal and institutional reforms to protect advocates and reclaim civic freedoms.
This achievement reflects MSU-General Santosโ commitment to advancing excellence in research on human rights, peacebuilding, and social justice.
