Born in 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘇, 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗻𝗮, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗼 𝗔. 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 was a pioneering Filipino botanist whose lifelong dedication to 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒚, 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒂𝒙𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒚, 𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒑𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 laid the foundation for the scientific documentation of Philippine flora.

His career began as a 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 (𝟭𝟵𝟮𝟬–𝟭𝟵𝟮𝟲) before becoming a 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 (𝟭𝟵𝟮𝟲–𝟭𝟵𝟮𝟴) and later a 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁. As the long-time 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, he rebuilt the nation's botanical collections after World War II through extensive field expeditions, preserving invaluable records of Philippine biodiversity. He also authored 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 (1951) and published more than 𝟭𝟮𝟵 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀, which continue to serve as essential references for botanical and pharmacological research.

Among his greatest recognitions was being proclaimed 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 (1980). He also received the 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗹 from the 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 (1969) and the 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗹 from the 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 (1966). In honor of his lasting contributions, the orchid species 𝙏𝙪𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙨𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙞 bears his name.
