Sea Turtle Hatchling Release | July 04, 2026

The President, Chris G. Evidientes, and Adviser, Dexter John R. Yumang, of the Division Federation of Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) of SDO General Santos City participated in the Symbolic Sea Turtle Hatchling Release, releasing 112 Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings into the protected seascapes of Kalaong, Maitum, Sarangani Province.

The activity was led by Sherwin Cuaresma, a local resident of Kalaong and a dedicated Sea Turtle Conservationist, who has been actively protecting sea turtle nesting sites and promoting marine conservation within the community.

The hatchlings released were Olive Ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea), one of the five sea turtle species found in Philippine waters. This species is frequently recorded along Sarangani’s coastal waters and nesting beaches. Smaller than Green Sea Turtles, Olive Ridleys are globally known for their remarkable mass nesting behavior, called arribadas, where thousands of females come ashore simultaneously to lay their eggs.

This meaningful conservation activity was made possible through the collaboration of the Division Federation of SSLG – SDO General Santos City, Pi Omicron Youth Volunteers Organization, and the Local Sea Turtle Conservationists of Kalaong, Maitum, reaffirming their shared commitment to protecting marine biodiversity and preserving the country’s precious marine ecosystems for future generations.
