What Is Onomatopoeia?

arf! arf! 🐕

chirp! chirp! 🐦

whoooosh! 💨

beep! beep! 🚗

Do you hear it? 👂

➡️These are common sounds that we hear every day from the honking of horns to the chirping of birds. But have you ever tried to ask yourself what are these sounds? or how do we even name them? 🤔

Well, these sounds are examples of Onomatopoeia.

➡️The word onomatopoeia comes from the combination of two Greek words, onoma meaning "name" and poiein meaning "to make," so onomatopoeia literally means "to make a name (or sound)." That is to say that the word means nothing more than the sound it makes. 😮😮

➡️Onomatopoeia elevates language above and beyond the literal words on the page. The sensory effect of onomatopoeia is used to create and develop particularly vivid imagery—as if you are in the text itself. It is also used in:

Literature for children. Onomatopoeia is common in children's books, but that doesn't mean it's simple. Somewhat, it is used differently depending on the viewer.
Books about comics. Sound effects written in stylized speech bubbles are a well-known example of onomatopoeia in comic books. The words "pow," "bang," and "kaboom" are popular, but comic book writers occasionally create neologisms (or new words) for particular characters and plots.
In advertising, onomatopoeia is used as a powerful mnemonic device to get with the goal of getting consumers to recognize the goods or service it promotes.

Does language influence the way we think?💭

Language is one of the most powerful abilities humans have.💪

➡️If you know the principle of linguistic relativity, it states that the language that people use to talk about the world has a direct influence on how they perceive the world. Alternatively, people could only understand aspects of the world for which they had words. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

➡️Historically, people have treated words as mere tags for objects and have historically treated words as mere labels for objects, and languages as various ways to connect words together to express thoughts, feelings, and concepts. However, language is much more than that. We could indeed exchange complex views and beliefs with one another because of it, whether spoken aloud or written in ink. Language also allows us to elicit emotions, creativeness, and action. ✍️

➡️There are countless other examples of how language influence awareness, such as gender and event description. However, the bottom line remains the same: languages do not limit our ability to understand or perceive the world instead hey focus our attention and thought on specific aspects of the world.🌎

➡️The ability to speak and express themselves fluently in the English language, whether orally or in writing, is a vital skill. Languages help to shape one's personality, boost confidence, and aid in information exchange. However, some people spend too much time studying grammar and remembering the lists of words instead of putting what they've learned into practice. That's why many beginners use other words and improve their vocabulary to help them sound smarter.😊😊😊

For these examples:

☑️Instead of using the word " It's hard" we can also use.
-It’s challenging
-It’s tricky.
-It’s tough.
-It’s not so simple.

☑️Instead of using the word " I’m happy" we can also use.
-I’m thrilled.
-I’m excited.
-I’m genuinely happy to hear that
-I’m so incredibly happy for you.

☑️Instead of using the word " I agree" we can also use.
-Certainly.
-100%
-Absolutely.
-For sure.
-Definitely.
-That’s just what I was thinking.
-I feel that way too.

We feel limited as English as a second language speaker because we get distracted by the words that are available to us. We know a lot more words in English, but we don't seem to use them as much. 🥰🥰

Preposition: Onto 🆚 Into

"You poured milk into the glass" is the correct preposition for this scenario. 🥛

➡️A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. Some examples of prepositions are words like "in," "at," "on," "of," and "to."😄

➡️In English, prepositions are extremely idiomatic. Even though there are some usage rules, much preposition usage is determined by fixed expressions. In all of these cases, it is preferable to recognize the phrase rather than the individual preposition.🤗

➡️The other two prepositions of direction are compounds formed by adding "to" to the corresponding prepositions of location.

The preposition of location determines the meaning of the preposition of direction.
ON + TO = onto: signifies movement toward a surface
IN + TO = into: signifies movement toward the interior of a volume
("To" is part of the directional preposition toward, and the two mean about the same thing.)

✔️For examples:
🗹Onto
1. Water was onto the floor below.
2. Don't spatter the porridge onto the table.
3. She screwed the picture frame onto the wall.

🗹Into
1. Don't put new milk into the old bottle.
2. Tuck your shirt into your trousers.
3. She put her friend's letter into the box.

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.”- -Ludwig Wittgenstein🤗

➡️Learning a second or foreign language in the twenty-first century is not only advantageous but also vital for self-development. The globalization of the world economy is bringing many cultures and people into closer touch. The internet and the accessibility of worldwide travel have broken down the barriers that formerly separated the world's societies. 🌎🌎

➡️Different advantages of learning another language include improved academic performance, cognitive development, and much more favorable attitudes toward other languages and cultures. Clearly said, kids or even professionals must study the English language in order to perform well in their field.🧠

Language learning has been shown to improve a student’s cognitive function such as:
1.Enhanced Problem Solving Skills
2.Improved Verbal and Spatial Abilities
3.Improved Memory Function (long & short-term)
4.Enhanced Creative Thinking Capacity
5.Better Memory
6.More Flexible and Creative Thinking
7.Improved Attitude Toward the Target Language and Culture

How to speak English fluently in 5 steps!

➡️1. Slow down:
Speaking too quickly is a typical concern among foreign-language speakers or even English speakers. To do this, try to speak slowly and make your words simple. 🐌

➡️2. Act confident
When it comes to speaking English, many people are shy or embarrassed. Don't be that way. Be the most confident "you" you know. 😎

➡️3. Use emphasis
Another thing our voices do naturally is highlight certain words in a sentence. This emphasis informs the listener about what is important in the sentence and clarifies the meaning.🎤

➡️4. Practice
'Practice makes perfect,' as the English say. If you want to do something exceptionally well, you must put in a lot of effort, make mistakes, and learn from them. Use Google Translate on your mobile to speak to it in English and see if Google could really write exactly what you're talking. And when you practice, don't think of yourself as a student - as someone learning to speak. Consider yourself to be an English speaker. ✍️

➡️5. Keep going
Continue even if you make a mistake. Know that few individuals, even native English speakers, speak English flawlessly and that we all make mistakes. People will notice if you become embarrassed or shy after making an error, not the mistake itself! So keep going and keep talking when speaking English!. 😄

Always remember “ A master was once a beginner” 😊😊😊

The Role of English In Scientific Communication

✔️ "English is the universal form of communication in science," is true. Though several countries keep publishing journals and scientific research in their native language, English is now the best way of sharing one's research outcomes with thousands of scientists. However, how did this happen?

✔️ Throughout the Medieval Era, Arabic was the language of science in all Islamic countries, whereas Latin was the main form of communication and expression among European scientists. Eventually, some Europeans and English were all used in their respective nations, and many of them became associated with a specific discipline, such as mathematics. German majoring in physics or chemistry. The dominance and use of these languages changed over the years, based on the growth and decline of science, which was influenced by each country's economical situation and culture.

✔️ Almost every major science journal you've ever heard of is written in English. However, this isn't entirely coincidental. Because science is such a broad and collaborative field, it seemed necessary at some point in the past to establish and stick to a scientific lingua franca. English was chosen as the bridge language of science, as it is in many other fields.

Homophones: When To Use 'Then' and 'Than'
Here’s how to keep them straight!

"Elephant's bones are heavier then human bones."

Wait.?? Then you just said...then?

Read it again.

Did you see it? 👀
That harmless little four-letter word then. It should have been then.

If you ask me, I would say " That's normal, kid" because some people get tripped up on then and than all the time—and why not? They look and sound so similar but have different meanings and are called homophones.

➡️ Then can function as an adjective, adverb, or noun. Then indicates time or consequence, as in the following examples:

1. Chocolate cakes were cheaper back then.
2. I mixed cream and butter and then wait for a while.
3. First I’ll drink my orange juice, then eat my bagel.

➡️ Than is the word to choose in phrases like smaller than, smoother than, and further than. And it's the word that follows other, rather, less, and more. Also, it is a conjunction or preposition used to indicate comparison for example:

1. Yuri's puppy is heavier than Hiro's puppy.
2. This is more than enough.
3. Your hair is smoother than my hair. I love it.

📌Remember! Than is used when you're talking about comparisons; then is used when you're talking about something relating to time.

➡️Society shapes and binds the community by using one word to create one sentence, and this sentence will combine with another sentence that will become a language. In our daily lives, a language is an important tool for expressing and communicating our emotions ❤️❤️❤️ --- just like how the way we feel when we talk to our loved ones 👨‍👩‍👦 or even in the community we live in.

➡️Writing and speaking are also important parts of our self-development, especially when we understand and speak English proudly. Seeking out possibilities to go beyond our typical comfort zones is one of the best ways to learn about society, culture, and language. For example, living overseas presents multiple challenges that can be transformed into important lessons.
➡️In this way, understanding the English language, can help us better understand ourselves and why we act the way we do.
