I was fortunate enough to be sent to 🇯🇵 for a Category 3 Workshop on the IBDP Experimental Program. We spent 2.5 days working through the nitty gritty details of the new IBDP IA rubrics, the Investigation skills & different strategies to improve the experimental program. As always the best part of the workshop was working with other IB teachers & we were a small but mighty crew! I enjoyed exploring the city in the evenings, eating yummy Japanese food 🍣 & the cool weather (compared to Manila). A good time for sure!

It's been a few weeks since school started here in Manila and this year I am teaching 3 sections of Year 1 HL Biology! We are currently learning about Molecular Biology & today we broke out the Molecular model kits to build dipeptides and a polypeptide. Such a fun activity & low prep!

We had a PD day today focused on curriculum work & it was so much better because we could bring our doggos! My girl Kooga was great company as I mapped out units for the new course. During our wellness hour all the pups came out to play, so they slept during our afternoon meeting. This is the first school where I have had the opportunity to do this, does anyone else have dog friendly PD days?

Last week I had the opportunity to travel with a group of 25 students & 2 colleagues to a charity called Bahay Tuluyan in Laguna… about an hour from Metro Manila 🇵🇭. Students spent four days making improvements to the site and interacting with the children who live there. I took on a curtain project and taught my students how to use a sewing machine, pin & cut fabric to a specific size. It was a busy & fulfilling week.

And just like that my first semester at ISM is over! We ended the instructional days with Filipiniana a celebration of our host country the Philippines 🇵🇭 with food stalls at the Baril Fiesta, a parade of people in Filipino dress & an assembly full of amazing musical & dance performances! My grade 10 students are learning about data analysis 🧐 including calculating the mean, standard deviation & doing t-tests. So we need data to analyze! Today students measured the circumference of palm tree 🌴 trunks in the middle school & high school courtyards. To make their data more reliable they had 3 different student teams measure each tree & to keep track of the trees we decided to give them names instead of numbers! So much more fun!

My 10th grade Biology students are learning about the scientific process and how we do science. It’s been really fun finding ways to let them practice this skill. This week students designed an investigation about how the amount of salt or sugar in solution affects gummy candies (Gumius deliciosa) & we even tried using concentrated gelatin cubes. Students chose to measure the change in mass or the change in length of their gummies.

Somehow I’ve been a high school science teacher for 15 years! This is my 11th school year abroad & my 5th school! 🇨🇦 🇨🇳 🇻🇪 🇲🇦 🇵🇭 This picture was taken in my new classroom here in the Philippines where I am teaching Grade 10 Biology 🧬 and IBDP Environmental Systems & Societies 🌱 🌏. I’m feeling both excited and overwhelmed by all the changes as my new year begins. I hope everyone’s season goes well.
