Kissa Quipao, a student-athlete from Esperanza, Masbate, secured the gold medal in the girlsโ weightlifting category even without access to standard training equipment.
The story of Quipao and her fellow student-athletes was shared during the third-day media conference held at Albay Central School, where gold medalists and coaches from across the Bicol Region gathered to share their experiences in the regional sports competition.
In an interview with DZGB News, Allanaraiz-Marfil National High School (AMNHS) Head Leonel Potestad said their athletes train without proper weightlifting equipment.
โSemento po na inilalagay sa lata at nilalagyan ng tubo ang ginagamit naming weights. Mga gulong din ang binubuhat ng mga bata dahil wala kaming equipment para sa weightlifting,โ Potestad said.
Potestad added that the school is located in a remote area in Esperanza, Masbate, making it difficult for the athletes to access proper training facilities.
โKung sino man po ang gustong tumulong sa aming mga atleta, malaking bagay po iyon dahil kulang talaga kami sa kagamitan,โ he added.
Meanwhile, Coach Rosegen D. Ortega said the athletesโ daily activities also contribute to their strength. โPagbuhat ng mga gulong ang warm-up namin, at sanay na sa pagbubuhat ang mga bata dahil tumutulong ang iba sa construction at pag-igib ng tubig,โ Ortega said.
Quipao also helps her family in fishing, often pulling fishing nets โ a task that helps build the strength she uses in weightlifting.
Despite the challenges, the team from Esperanza won one gold medal, four silver medals, and one bronze medal in the weightlifting competition.
