COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT THROUGH THE POWER OF WORDS! 📝✨

The Department of Language and Literature (DLL) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), Isabela State University, successfully conducted its extension activity, "Empowering Barangay Constituents Through Communication Writing," yesterday, June 26, 2026, at Pangal Norte, Echague, Isabela. Led by DLL Chair Ms. Leizl Joy A. Alzate and CAS Extension Coordinator Ms. Bernadette R. Gumpal, the ISU team was warmly welcomed by 1st Kagawad Mr. Rustico B. Doroni, representing Barangay Captain Hon. Leonilo C. Rivera Jr.

The seminar featured two specialized tracks tailored to the community's needs. For the first track, Pangal Norte Barangay Officials learned about Writing Barangay Reports from Ms. Michelle Angellie P. Dela Cruz and Writing Minutes of the Meeting from Ms. Bernadette R. Gumpal to enhance local governance and documentation. The second track focused on workforce readiness for local adults and out-of-school youth, featuring lectures on the Parts of a Letter and Characteristics of Effective Writing by Ms. Leizl Joy A. Alzate, and Application Letter and Resume Writing by Mx. Samantha Dominique R. Itliong.

June 16, 2026, the Department of Languages and Literature (DLL) officially met with the officials of Barangay Pangal Norte to lay the groundwork for an upcoming community development initiative.

Led by Barangay Captain Rivera, the collaborative meeting finalized the implementation plan for the extension activity entitled "Empowering Barangay Constituents Through Communication Writing."

The primary focus of today's session was aligning the schedule of activities and establishing operational committees to ensure a structured rollout.

Captain Rivera expressed strong support for the project, noting that improved communication skills will greatly enhance local governance, official record-keeping, and community engagement.

The Chemistry Department successfully conducted the first leg of its extension project, “Chemistry in Action: Empowering Students Through Research Writing, Laboratory Safety, and Environmental Stewardship,” in partnership with Pangal Sur High School on June 10, 2026.

The activity aimed to foster students’ appreciation of science by introducing the basics of research writing, promoting safe laboratory practices, and strengthening environmental awareness and stewardship. The program formally commenced with welcome remarks delivered by Mr. Jayson Olipas, Science Teacher of Pangal Sur High School, who warmly welcomed the participants and the speakers, and emphasized the value of learning through science.

Lectures on research fundamentals, including research writing and data collection, were facilitated by Ms. Buena Flor L. Gargabite-Bolanos and Ms. Janice C. Malana, while Ms. Krysma Irene R. Munar discussed the Philippine environmental laws and their significance in environmental protection.

A total of 55 Senior High School students from Grades 11 and 12 actively participated in the activity, showing enthusiasm and engagement throughout the sessions. The successful completion of the first leg of this extension initiative reflects the Chemistry Department’s continued commitment to inspiring young learners to appreciate science and its role in building a safer and more sustainable community.

The Chemistry Department, through Ms. Krysma Irene R. Munar, conducted an online coordination meeting on June 2, 2026, with Pangal Sur High School Principal Dr. Lizil A. Publico to discuss the planning and scheduling of the extension project entitled “Chemistry in Action: Empowering Students through Research Writing, Laboratory Safety, and Environmental Stewardship.” During the meeting, both parties discussed the overall implementation plan of the project, including the proposed schedule of activities, target participants, delivery modalities for the sessions, and logistical arrangements.

The extension initiative aims to introduce Grade 12 STEM students to the fundamentals and basic concepts of research writing, promote awareness of laboratory safety practices, and foster environmental stewardship while enhancing students’ appreciation of scientific concepts through engaging experiments and science-based activities.

This initiative reflects the continued commitment of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Chemistry Department to promoting science education, community engagement, and meaningful learning opportunities through collaborative extension programs.

“The Write Way” Capacity Building Successfully Conducted

On May 7, 2026, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), through the Department of Languages and Literature (DLL) in collaboration with the ISU Language Center, successfully conducted a capacity-building webinar under the extension project “The Write Way: A Capacity Building on Academic and Research Writing – Developing Faculty as Research Mentors.” The project leader is Ms. Bernadette Gumpal, and the activity was held via Zoom and was participated in by teachers from Manuel L. Quezon National High School.

The session was delivered as part of Writing Research Effectively Season 2, carrying the theme: “Text, Talk, and Tradition: New Frontiers in Sociolinguistics and Literary Studies.” The webinar provided participants with meaningful insights into research writing, language documentation, and literary analysis, strengthening their capacity as both researchers and mentors.

Highlights of the Session:

* Dr. Michael S. Naidas (Adventist University of the Philippines) discussed “Roots and Routes: Conducting Literary Research on Diaspora Literature,” offering perspectives on identity, migration, and narrative analysis.
* Prof. Lev Blumenfeld (Carleton University, Canada) presented “Linguistics and Language Documentation,” emphasizing the importance of preserving linguistic diversity.
* Ms. Ashley Promislow (Carleton University, Canada) shared insights on Yogad Language Documentation, highlighting local language preservation efforts.

The activity fostered academic engagement and professional development among participants, equipping them with practical knowledge in research writing and mentoring.

Through this initiative, the College of Arts and Sciences continues to advance its commitment to quality extension services by empowering educators and strengthening research culture in partner institutions.

May 7, 2026:

The CAS Extension and Training Services Coordinator, together with the faculty extensionists visited Pangal Sur High School, Highway Region National High School, and Don Mariano Marcos High School to discuss the upcoming school-year collaborations for 2026.

The visit focused on finalizing Memorandums of Agreement (MOA) and scheduling the implementation of two major initiatives:

“Chemistry in Action: Empowering Students and Teachers through Research
Writing, Laboratory Safety, and Environment Stewardship” -Project leader Ms. Krysma Irene R. Munar (Chemistry Department ) ;and

“Project LEAD: Leaders’ Enhancement Approach for Development” - Project leader Mr. Jayron Bartolome (Social Sciences Department ).

Implementation dates have been set in coordination with the schools' faculty to ensure alignment with the new strengthened DepEd curriculum.

One chapter ends, another begins.

As another engaging webinar on May 7, 2026 approaches, the College of Arts and Sciences Extension proudly celebrates the successful conclusion of the Virtual English Language Educator (VELE) Season 3.

Spearheaded by the Department of Languages and Literature (DLL) through the ISU Language Center, VELE Season 3 continues to grow as a flagship initiative that brings together internationalization, community engagement, and capacity building. Building on the strong foundations of VELF 1 (2022) and VELE Season 2 (2023–2024), this season moves forward with a more focused and outcomes-driven approach.

Held on April 10, 17, and 24, 2026, the webinar series brought together distinguished speakers from Pakistan, Montenegro, Tanzania, Russia, Jordan, and the Philippines—creating a dynamic virtual space for shared learning, meaningful dialogue, and intercultural exchange in English language education.

As VELE Season 3 concludes, it highlights the importance of innovation, inclusivity, and continuous growth. More importantly, it reflects a sustained commitment to programs that are impactful, responsive, and globally relevant.

CAS Extension Update:
Strategic Planning in Barangay Pangal Norte

May 4, 2026, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) conducted an official visit to Barangay Pangal Norte, Echague, to discuss the implementation of two newly approved extension activities.

The faculty representatives from the Department of Languages and Literature (DLL) and the Department of Biological Sciences were welcomed by Barangay Chairman Leonilo C. Rivera Jr.

The meeting focused on aligning the project objectives with the needs of the barangay constituents and finalizing the schedule for the upcoming sessions.

Overview of Approved Projects:

* "Empowering Barangay Constituents Through Communication Writing (DLL): Led by Ms. Leizl Joy A. Alzate, this project is designed to provide technical assistance and training in administrative documentation for local community leaders.

* "Project Green B.A.G. (Barangay for Action on Garbage): Sustainable Waste Management for Healthier Barangays" (Department of Biological Sciences): Led by Mr. Rayniel Joshua DG Aquino, this initiative focuses on promoting environmental sustainability and ecological conservation within the barangay.

Through this collaboration, the College of Arts and Sciences continues its commitment to bringing academic expertise to the grassroots level through sustainable community extension programs.
