๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ด๐๐ฒ, ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐น๐ฎ โ In joyful celebration of the Mengal Festival and Indigenous Peoplesโ Month, the grounds of Echague Banchetto came alive on ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฒ, ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ, as young performers from the School of Saint Joseph the Worker (SSJW) ๐ฐ๐น๐ฎ๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฝ honors at the Balanban Dance Competition.
Fourteen schools gathered to honor the Balanban,a treasured traditional dance of the Yogad people, named for the distinctive local fish of the order Beloniformes, known for its uniquely bent head.
Through graceful movements mirroring the fishโs ways, the dance pays homage to Echagueโs natural abundance and enduring cultural identity. As affirmed by Cariaga (2014), the Balanban stands as the only widely documented Yogad dance in formal cultural repertoires, rendering its performance both an honor and a meaningful act of heritage stewardship.
Under Coach Danilo Basaysayโs rigorous training, the students spent weeks refining every step, rhythm, and gesture. Their work reflected commitment to local traditions, performed in observance of Indigenous Peoplesโ Month โ a time to honor and uphold the nationโs indigenous heritage.
Supported by their families and community, the dancers carried tradition onto the stage with pride, grace, and heartfelt respect. When the final scores were announced, their devotion bore splendid fruit: SSJW stood triumphant above all competing schools.
Their victory is far more than an award, it is proof that when heritage meets youthful passion, excellence follows. The Balanban, long cherished as the crown jewel of Yogad tradition, has found worthy new champions in these young performers.
Today, September 9, these accomplished dancers carry their victory and heritage further, as they are set to perform at the prestigious NCCA-PCEP Sining Program, bringing the beauty and pride of Yogad culture to a wider audience. Through their artistry and devotion, they ensure this precious legacy shines bright, inspiring all to honor, preserve, and take pride in the enduring treasures of our indigenous culture.
